A wild guess ... Sunday game is nationally televised .. ESPN Sunday Night baseball . Cardinals probably already contacted about featuring Herrera ..interviews , etc. due to his 3 HR game .
Oli doesn't want to take the chance that Herrera gets a even a minor injury today .. foul ball off his hand , strain, contusion etc that would prevent him from playing .
Imagine ESPN Eduardo Perez having all the hype for Herrera and saying 'Too bad folks he got nicked up in Sat. game and he is unavailable for tonight's game ! We sure were looking forward to seeing him play tonight. The guy has been red hot ! '
Give Herrera a guaranteed national spotlight moment . He deserves it .

No. We don’t play like that. He ain’t sitting out to be ready for cameos.
As for the spotlight, a purposeful mention with replay would be nice.
Every pitcher on the team would rather turn to Pages than throw to Eephus.
Eephus has a hot bat but there is more to the game than that.
And the bat will determine how many games he starts - which will probably be around 100 but he will need to keep hitting to get there.

Unless he's got a boo boo we don't know about, it sure is a head scratcher. They just had a day off Thursday

Old Oli does what they tell him to. Apparently they came up with some theory that says he should not be in the lineup.
FWIW I doubt anyone plays today. That being said, Oli and Oli ALONE makes the lineup card. Both he and Mo have said that repeatedly. Plus, Mo's a lame duck at this point. Doubt he holds a lot of sway.
This is what I've said all offseason is one of the Cardinals biggest detriments to winning the division: overcoming the Olifactor.
Pretty difficult to go on sustained winning streaks when you constantly sit your hottest hitters for a "maintenance day." The guy's an idiot. I'd love to give him the benefit of the doubt because Herrera may have an ailment, but Oli has admitted this as well over and over.

Name any MLB player that you think a manager sits in order to please the press. Do they do this for Othani? Judge? Hell no and not in this case.

Yeah, but...
Again, this is a FO and player development problem. Not Herrera's. He's not great catcher material. Why wasn't this problem fixed in the minors? But as to right now, why the idolization of Burly as DH over Herrera by Marmol? Burly's ceiling is as low as the skies in STL this weekend.

Game or no game I hope Bloom is taking mental notes on this. In case he even gets any wild hair about keeping Oli
