A touch of Gray

Post by imetsatchelpaige »

OK, that was concerning, particularly after his horrific spring (which we are told does not really count).
The Twins start was uneven at best. Yesterday was a disaster, despite 9 SO's. He is getting hit harder than anyone else on staff. His ERA is 5.73.
Alarmist or sound the alarm?

His first start was about what I expected. Second start was actually really good until he went out there for the seventh. I think Marmol was trying to hard to save the bullpen on that one.

He is averaging a run an inning so far.
I'll put you down for an "alarmist" vote.

Should've been pulled, this early in the season, after six when his line of 6 IP/ 1 ER would've been very good.

Poor managing, I'm not concerned about Gray.

2 starts shouldnt be an alarm one way or another, esepecially not when only 1 was bad. What is concerning though is 1 particular fact- the homeruns. Gray had a down year last year and the metrics suggest one main reaspn to blame- an insanely elevated homerun rate last year. And through 2 starts this year- he has given up 3 homeruns. Im not sure of he just makes more mistakes dead center than he used to cuz all his other metrics, strikeouts, walks are good.

The only thing that concerns me was his homeruns were way up last year and he has already given up 3 homeruns this year too. I think he will be fine overall but not the ace we hoped for

You had to find one negative inning from the starters.

Agree with you ! Six innings was fine. When Oli went out to the mound, he must have been asking if he was feeling tired and told 'No'
Oli deferred to the veteran. If Gray had been any other pitcher , Oli would have just pulled him .
So Oli gave his top arm the benefit of the doubt and bingo wouldn't you know it got burned with the grand slam .
The old ' the manager took the guy out one pitch too late' thing.
Now that Oli was burned , if Gray would start a 7th inning next time (which unsure if Oi would ) , you can bet if even the first batter gets on base .. walk , scratch hit, blooper Oli will pull him right then and there.

Can you bet that, though? There's very little evidence of Oli learning from his mistakes.

No doubt Oli would've pulled Pallante or Libby, probably Fedde too.

Not many veterans like Gray are going to tell the Manager they want to be yanked, up to Oli to make that call.
