Boyes did it for one year. Kyrou has 3 30 goal seasons now at 26. Huge difference. Not everyone is a so called complete player. Guys like Sunny Walker Torpo have to play a certain way because they don’t have game breaking offensive talent otherwise they won’t be in the league. We agree on him having a more rounded game he’s maturing. But for 70 to 80% of the fan base to hammer on the guy and make him responsible for team issues for years is out of line. I’m glad it’s changedzamadoo wrote: ↑02 Apr 2025 14:40 pmHe was bordering Brad Boyes territory before this season. Kyrou deserved every single boo he got and more.
He was the “anti-team” player for a long time. If you couldn’t see that… you were not watching.
I don’t give a (bleep) how much skill you have, if you play completely disinterested defense, you are a poison to a team .
Bannister tried being nice to him, but even he got fed up and benched his entitled (donkey) for a period. That took guts, because the SC Winning coach who last disciplined him was fired. They broke up him and Thomas and forced a solid NHL Wing to play Center just for him out of desperation. I will always be grateful to Buchnevich for that, andI will say for the tenth time I don’t know how he kept from throttling him.
The bottom line is… Kyrou grew up and thank the hockey gods that he did.
I used to say that I hated him, but jeebus, he can score two goals on any given shift.
There are few players who have done such a remarkable job of learning to play the 200 foot game for the sake of the team than him, in recent memory.
By the time Monty came along, Kyrou was making good progress, you could see it in fits and starts by the end of last season, and I have no doubt that watching a similarly blessed talent near his own age (Holloway), who played the right goddanged way… was a lovely challenge.Thise two are almost mirrors of each other these days and it is sooooo beautiful.
He has grown up and that is one of the one of the best stories I have had the pleasure to watch unfold in a good long while.
To make the journey from a cancer to a man who takes pride in playing the whole game the right way is pretty epic.
I admire him for it.
And it is a shame that his extended adolescence was such an awful stain on the history of this franchise.
There are few as awful.
That is why his journey is so epic,
.
He is a helluva teammate these days.
It's far beyond back checking (which at first he did nearly zero of but was the first thing he figured out he needed to do to not be a one-dimensional over-paid player on a losing team). I mean just a simple dump in or just using his speed to drive the puck deeper into the zone was completely lost on him.
As someone else mentioned, it is a night-and-day difference. A reason so many were so angry was because he was around in 2019 to see what it takes, and then he was playing with those same players and under Chief but took this long to figure out he needed to learn and grow as he has. We were angry when he wouldn't buy into that under Chief and was a part of him being fired (and I give Thomas flak for that as well).
It wasn't until this season that he looked like a more complete player, and not until Holloway-Schenn-Kyrou was assembled that it has really clicked for him. No doubt Holloway has rubbed off on him, and it seems Monty has found a way to get all these guys playing for and with each other.
I've been pointing these things out for a while, and like Harry said, no holding grudges. We're all happy that he has figured it out in his 7th pro season, months before his 27th birthday, and months before his Full-NTC kicks in.

Re: Kyrou haters
He’s made improvements in back-checking, battling for the puck along the boards and making the simple play with the puck vs stick handling every time and often losing the puck. He’s improved more at these areas than I thought possible for him.
Now he’s throwing some hits. Also great.
If he keeps improving in these areas and the other areas like taking a hit to make a play and taking the puck wide on a player and using speed to battle through the hit to still come out with the puck he will have exceeded my expectations.
The being willing to take a hit to make the right play is a necessity to win a cup.
Against Detroit I did see one play where he took the hit and coughed the puck up easily but it is a step in the right position because last year he would have just got rid of the puck and not took the hit.
The other positive is Holloway does all these things well so Kyrou doesn’t have to look far for an example.

Re: Kyrou haters
I can't remeber the last time I saw him cough up the puck while trying to toe drag. I was a hater and in large part blame him for Berube's firing, but he's finally done what the haters wanted all along: play with some defensive responsibility. He'll never be an A-1 defender, but he doesn't have to be since he can be such a dynamic offensive threat.Bluesfan1978 wrote: ↑03 Apr 2025 06:59 am He’s made improvements in back-checking, battling for the puck along the boards and making the simple play with the puck vs stick handling every time and often losing the puck. The only thing that's still an open question for me regarding this young core as future Cup contenders is if we have enough size and grit to win multiple seven game series, especially against bigger / heavier teams. We're not necessarily below average in size, but this team is lighter and smaller than the 2019 team while being speedier and probably more skilled. Whether they can hang on the physicality front will show itself in the playoffs and I'm sure Armstrong will add / tweak the core accordingly.

Re: Kyrou haters
At no point have I ever wanted Jordan Kyrou to be Rick Meagher out there.
He is paid what he is paid to do one thing and that is to score goals.
He is really, really good at that, and really good at creating offense.
All I've ever wanted him to be, is not be a defensive liability out there. This year he isn't.
Why he and Thomas never click is beyond me, but that's ok if he's producing with Schenn at a ppg pace, that's what the team needs.

Re: Kyrou haters
I have said this before but, I think a lot of people see offense as being about natural talent and defense as a question of effort. I think it is probably not that simple. Maybe it just took Kyrou awhile to figure out the balance, how to play well on defense without detracting from his offensive game. Maybe his understanding of the defensive side just grew. Clearly putting him with Halloway brought out the best in both of them. We can't just assume that has previously poor defense was simply a question of effort.
Brett Hull had some pretty nasty +/- seasons as well. The year that Kyrou was -38 Ryan O'Reily had a pretty rough rating before he was traded as I recall; that was just a bad team all the way around. My point is that if your roster is depending on Jordan Kyrou to win a Selke, that is poor roster construction.
The kid has grown and he is playing fantastic. How many players are able to improve as much as he has? Also, other than his regrettable handling of Berebue's dismissal, he has been a model citizen. The team is fortunate to have him and we as fans should enjoy his great play.

Re: Kyrou haters
Great question. Kyrou is a better player with Schenn than he is with The Thomas. Seems when played together, Kyrou, The Thomas and Count Chocula attempt too many cute passes.TheJackBurton wrote: ↑03 Apr 2025 08:34 am At no point have I ever wanted Jordan Kyrou to be Rick Meagher out there.

The reason is that you can't teach players how to score goals at a rate like Kyrous. You can't teach his instinct, his shot, or his hands.Bob39 wrote: ↑03 Apr 2025 08:59 am I have said this before but, I think a lot of people see offense as being about natural talent and defense as a question of effort. You can however teach Kyrou how to play defense at a rate that is equivalent to an average defensive player by showing him positioning and board play.
Re: Kyrou haters
Perfectly stated Jack. Goal scorers thrive on finding holes in the defense and open space. That’s why they’re accused of cherry picking. They kinda are. But that’s what they’re paid to do.TheJackBurton wrote: ↑03 Apr 2025 09:42 amThe reason is that you can't teach players how to score goals at a rate like Kyrous. Re: Kyrou haters
I think the term "Kyrou haters" is kind of silly. I a Blues fan and never hated him or any Blues player. However, I complained about his play for years . He periodically didn't show up or compete. Besides being inconsistent, he had awful body language at times on the ice. There gets to a point you wonder if he is ever going to get his act together. I'm glad the light switch went on and he's grown into a man. I think Montgomery has helped and he clearly has great chemistry with Holloway.
Re: Kyrou haters
I hate to even think about Brad Boyes, but he scored 42 goals and then 33 goals consecutively his age 25 and 26 seasons. Kyrou was eerily similar, but had the benefit of initially coming onto the team during the Cup year and with champions, compared to Boyes coming on during sell-off rebuild years. However, the main similarity I have pointed out over the past several years was the severe lack of gumption (to be polite). I don't need a lecture on 4th line vs top-6 players. I don't care about your made up 70-80% of the fan base number - I just call it how it is here in the Show-Me State. It's not ONLY the gumption part either, but the decision-making as well. Lots of talent, but not lots of IQ to go with it, which is what was so maddening for many on this board.Bacchk29 wrote: ↑03 Apr 2025 06:54 am Boyes did it for one year. Yes, we agree he has finally figured out that you can't be like Brad Boyes if you want to be a top line player on a serious, winning team. It's more than just back-checking or hits, but just driving the puck into the zone rather than curling up at the blue line out of fear (or just confusion?), retrieving the puck along the boards rather than just floating around and making your teammates do it every single time, skating the puck into 2-4 defenders rather than making the smart play and dumping (and perhaps chasing?), taking a few more hard strides to be assertive without the puck rather than just giving up space and letting players skate on by with the puck, being strong on the puck in general...etc. etc. etc. Just all the things that make you a hockey player and make hockey such a great sport, instead of NBA basketball. It is so great seeing him figure it out in his age 27 season compared to Boyes needing to be traded because he continued his pusillanimous nature.
Re: Kyrou haters
Loved Jordan’s game tonight. Won a lot of puck battles, heavy on the forecheck and was playing great away from the puck. And a sniper’s goal. A joy to watch.

LMAO... this is too [fork]ing easy! Keep flailing away if it helps you cope. Not sure what the weather's like where you are in Calgary, but it's raining here in St. Louis. Despite the rain, it's all sunshine and roses during this Blues winning streak. You must love it, right? I mean, you're a Blues fan, right?neverchange27 wrote: ↑04 Apr 2025 12:04 pm Srv. 70 and born on this forum.
