Can blues catch avs
We have 6 games
They have 7 games
We are 3 points behind them
We would have to beat them in pts tie goes to them.

Re: Can blues catch avs
Avs magic number on the Blues is 7 points.
Dallas round 1 isn't an ideal matchup
However Blues- Stars (North Stars included) has the most Game 7 OT situations in league history (5) with I think a couple others at 3 like VAN-CGY
Blues magic number to clinch playoffs is 10
(over Calgary ... vs. Van it's 9 ... Utah it's 6)

The results of this Saturday's game will directly affect the possibility of us catching them. I say we'll catch them if we win on Saturday

Re: Can blues catch avs
Thanks for the numbers, not to sure why I haven't been looking that up. I basically have been eyeballing 95 and assume that if that isn't enough to get in, then we are extremely unlucky (97 percent of teams in league history have gotten in at 95 or 96 points). Only 3 teams haven't gotten the wild card when they have gotten to those points.
I don't think the Blues want Dallas either. That last game with them showed the issue. Dallas also has the goaltending, and they have an extremely competent top line who has been doing it for a while. 3 years ago, they literally outscored the other 3 lines combined. Now they have Rantanen? They are my pick and have been my pick to win the cup since before last season started. I was wrong last year, I hope I am wrong again. But the mismatch is in the special teams. We outplayed them in 5on5 pretty hard last game. We had a bit of a goalie sieve problem but the fact is we smoked them in 5on5. And they still managed to kick our butts.
I don't think you want to see that 4-7 games in a row. Could we win a couple? Sure, but it would be a monumental task if it happened in the first round. The team to beat the Stars will likely be like last year, easier route and get them later in the playoffs. the 3rd and 4th rounds of the playoffs are vastly different than the first 2. The teams are all grinded up. The Panthers were the exception to that rule last year it seemed like. The year before they showed how bad they were beat getting to the cup

Re: Can blues catch avs
Even if the Blues won in regulation and finish the season with a 16 game winning streak, Colorado only needs 3-2-1 or better against their other six opponents to clinch. Those opponents are Chicago tonight, Columbus tomorrow, they host Vegas and Vanouver before finishing at LA and Anaheim. It's a huge longshot and also one we probably don't want to happen anyway.

Would really rather face vegas or winnipeg in the first round and not dallas. Let Avs and Stars beat up on each other in first round.
Re: Can blues catch avs
Still mathematically possible but a lot would have to break rightSnuggyfresh wrote: ↑02 Apr 2025 12:50 pmsorry missed that when i was looking my badnetboy65 wrote: ↑02 Apr 2025 11:52 amWe’re 5 behind them and they have a game in handSnuggyfresh wrote: ↑02 Apr 2025 11:43 am We have 6 games

Can they? Mathematically, yes.
Will they? Almost certainly no.
Would we want them to? Probably not as we’d then likely face Dallas (unless Dallas passes Winnipeg, which quite honestly, is more likely than us passing Colorado).

There is no upshot to catch the Avs. Clinch, then rest key players for round 1 and we'll be happy we did come round 3.

Re: Can blues catch avs
Colorado is most likely to finish with 100-101 points. If we won out, we'd either be 1 point ahead of them or tied at absolute best. Thus, no real shot. My expectation is about 97 points, which is probably also enough to keep ahead of the wild.
I also expect Dallas to catch Winnipeg for what it's worth.

Re: Can blues catch avs
Highly unlikely. They are 5 points up and ifnthey win their game in hand today against lowly chicago, then they are up 7 points with 6 games left and 1 more game vs lowly anaheim which should be a victiry.Snuggyfresh wrote: ↑02 Apr 2025 11:43 am We have 6 games

If somehownthey drop this game to chicago in regulation then lose again to Columbus tomorrow, then we can start entertaining it as a possibility if we beat them in our head to head game.
Re: Can blues catch avs
Colorado wpuld have to lose to lowly chicago tonight then again to columbus tommorrow while we beat pitt for us to even entertain this as possibility. Ifnthat happens, we could beat avs on 5th to pull us within 1 and it is very possible.STL fan in MN wrote: ↑02 Apr 2025 13:54 pm Can they? Mathematically, yes.

More likely, avs kill chicago tonight and go up 7 with 6 games remaining(and 1 likely auto win vs ducks remaining)

Re: Can blues catch avs
I glanced at the standings earlier today wondering the same. Can the Blues catch the Avs? I dismissed the idea immediately when I looked at the standing. I think it would take a total collapse by the Avs...OR the Blues would need to win out their last 6 with a mini collapse by the Avs. But in all honesty, I don't think is matters which team the Blues face. Every team in the P[ositively] O[bnoxious] S[impleton] is dangerous and home ice isn't likely to change moving from WC to 3rd place.
Edit-
A closer look...the Ave have the tie breaker. The Blues need yet another point. 3rd place is not happening. Enjoy the run.

Re: Can blues catch avs
I dismissed it but it can actually become possible if the avs drop this game against the blackhawks. I thought theyd kill chicago but they are losing 1-0 after period 1.Harold_Melvin wrote: ↑02 Apr 2025 20:11 pm I glanced at the standings earlier today wondering the same. If they lose, then they have to face columbus while fatigued tomorrow and could lose while we beat pittsburgh maling gap 3 points, with us having a chance to make the gap 1 point when we play them on the 5th with same number of games played.
