Oh there was hate.

He took tons of kraaaap from tons of posters for tons of time. Every mistake or lacking enlarged. Your basic whipping boy. He was called a coward.

Sure fans have the right to do as they wish......the OP just wants to know where they are on him now.
When some fans zero in on a player, i.e. their whipping boy, every single little mistake is jumped on and screamed about ad nauseum. Every player, even the league's best, make mistakes. But if they aren't the current whipping boy, they get a pass. I saw tons of "mistakes" last night by both teams, but when Kyrou makes them, folks jump his [shirt] relentlessly.
Some people hold grudges. That is almost always an unhealthy thing.
They can see that he has made incredible changes to his gameplay, but they don't want to acknowledge it.
It can feel safer to continue hating once you have been burned.

But it ain't healthy, especially when the man has done his penance so diligently.

Agree that all players make mistakes. You earn whipping boy status when you do it game in game out for months on end. His season this year has been great, but you can't turn a blind eye to what he's been in past seasons.

Kyrou deserved every single boo he got and more.

He was the “anti-team” player for a long time. If you couldn’t see that… you were not watching.
I don’t give a (bleep) how much skill you have, if you play completely disinterested defense, you are a poison to a team .

Bannister tried being nice to him, but even he got fed up and benched his entitled (donkey) for a period. That took guts, because the SC Winning coach who last disciplined him was fired. They broke up him and Thomas and forced a solid NHL Wing to play Center just for him out of desperation. I will always be grateful to Buchnevich for that, andI will say for the tenth time I don’t know how he kept from throttling him.

The bottom line is… Kyrou grew up and thank the hockey gods that he did.
I used to say that I hated him, but jeebus, he can score two goals on any given shift.

There are few players who have done such a remarkable job of learning to play the 200 foot game for the sake of the team than him, in recent memory.

By the time Monty came along, Kyrou was making good progress, you could see it in fits and starts by the end of last season, and I have no doubt that watching a similarly blessed talent near his own age (Holloway), who played the right goddanged way… was a lovely challenge.Thise two are almost mirrors of each other these days and it is sooooo beautiful.

He has grown up and that is one of the one of the best stories I have had the pleasure to watch unfold in a good long while.

To make the journey from a cancer to a man who takes pride in playing the whole game the right way is pretty epic.
I admire him for it.
It’s almost as if not everyone matures at the same time or something

And it is a shame that his extended adolescence was such an awful stain on the history of this franchise.

Awful stain on the history of the franchise? Overdramatize much? 3rd straight 30 goal season only Tarasenko and Hull have done that in franchise history. Because he back checks more people are happy. Ok.

But what's in the past is done and can't be changed. Feel free to hang on to your negative feelings about him, but I'm certainly not going to. I see a guy who has progressed in his game and is now counted on by the coach in most situations. And he clearly produces, with this being his third straight 30+ goal season. It's a testament to him to get his game to where it is now, regardless if it took longer than some fans wanted.

Is there much worse "Team" behavior than ignoring the (absolutely correct) criticism from the most legendary coach in the 58 years of this franchise and disrespecting him to his face while on the ice after a game? He got Chief fired and did it in a childish and , almost, unforgivable way.

What is a bigger stain than playing the next home game and being booed (absolutely correctly) by your home crowd?

There may have been bigger scandals, but that public display of ignorant and entitled selfishness can't be beaten for on the ice shame.

Where am I wrong?

To be clear, I have completely forgiven him. He has paid the price and is a shining example of redemption.
That is a very dramatic thing. Especially when it is goddang true.

I don't have any negative feelings about him. He's playing great and a more complete game than just relying on his offensive skills. Happy he's turned the corner and hope he keeps it up. I don't know what you've been reading this season but most of us that dogged him in the past are happy with his performance and say so.

Maybe DA did try and deal him or at least make him available and no one wanted him? Sometimes things just have a way of working their way out, but I have a hard time believing that Kyrou is still around because DA had 100 percent confidence in him and knew he'd be where he is today.

I guess folks need to realize that negative pressure is just as important in developing a player as positivity, sometimes more depending on the individual. Heck, my ENTIRE first year in the military was Ops training (basic, jump school, SERE and Ranger school), and I honestly can't remember a SINGLE positive comment (trust me, quite the opposite).

My point is that the Kyrou we see today is a product of all his experiences to date, and the negative feedback he received (and his ability to adjust to it) is just as critical to this amazing turn-around and his growth as a man and player.

Good on him...

Perhaps. None of us will ever know for sure, but I have just as hard a time believing Army would give him 8x8 just to turn around and want to move him.

I am putting it into perspective.

It is one of the more inspirational stories in the history of the Franchise. I am sure that sounds over-dramatic, but I can't think of a better one. He is blessed to have the guts and heart to change his game . And we are blessed to see such humility and dedication from the guy.

That is a hell of a good point. Thanks for reminding us that there is more than one way to skin a cat, Pete.

When he got overwhelmingly booed by his home crowd every time he touched the puck, it shook him up. He could have treated this as arrogantly as he treated the criticism from Chief, but he didn't.

I don't think he had the tools to do so, but when he wept in the post-game interview... that might have been when he first considered changing his behavior.

I was a big Kyrou hater as far as not living up to the contract goes and getting it early. Thomas earned that contact and trust. Kyrou it was all a gambling bet. That being said, I could have lived with Kyrou as a player 2 years ago. He put up goals and was a points per game player. He was also dreadfully inefficient where when he was on the ice he was the most scored on (top 5 I believe) player in the league. I could still live with that. What I couldn't live with was his disappearing act. Dude would score 2 goals and 3 goals etc in random games, (winter classic with the mild) and then not show up on the stat sheet for 5 games. That kept happening. I even did a long form post on it last year showing him compared to his contemporaries receiving same money or same points and he was the odd one out. He was the only one that didn't have a stat sheet that read 1-1-1-2-0-1-2-1-1-0. His read 1-0-0-0-0-4-2-0-0-0-. So while ultimately he ended in similar points, he only really had an effective game like 4 or 5 times out of 10. That was my issue.

Kyrou this season? He is completely different. Noticeable every night. Even yesterday, he looked like he was skating past his stick every time. His brain was moving too fast for his skill for some reason, but you knew he would show up and score. And he unconventionally did it.

When a player has been on a team for as long as Jordan has, it is sometimes hard to realize he is still only 26.

He has always had elite speed and talent, but it was up for grabs as to whether he was one of those so-called head cases who would chronically disappoint.

After all, with professional athletes, what is between the ears is often what separates good from great. And as fans, it can be very hard if not impossible to know whether mental health, mental toughness and focus are an issue with any particular player.

Hopefully, he has turned the corner. But one season does not a career make. It would be wonderful if this year’s Jordan is the one we will see for as long as he wears the Bluenote.

Hard to say what makes him a different player this year.

Maybe a combination of maturation, increased dedication, realization he won’t be considered an elite player until he learns to play a 200’ team game, and possibly being pushed by younger skilled players who are playing the “right” way.

Regardless, he has been an absolute joy to watch, and hopefully our prior years of angst and frustration are behind us. I am just glad we are seeing him develop here instead of some other NHL city.

So I wanted to spread some more love for Jordan because he certainly deserves it (this year).

And I think some of the bashing he took here in prior years was over the top and unfair given his youth.

We as fans often develop lofty expectations for players who are hyped (and over hyped) by the organization, but sometimes we need to realize that patience is indeed a virtue, at least with some players.

My best guess is that DA had offers for Jordan, but he decided not to give up on him. As I said, we never know what really is going on behind the scenes which is critical if one is trying to figure out whether a player will eventually turn it around.

DA is a savvy and skilled GM, and I think Jordan is another example of that.

Re: Kyrou haters

callitwhatyouwant made a good point about Kyrou "disappearing" for long stretches, then going on a roll.

Initially, I agreed with that and ran some numbers. Not sure I agree with my original position, based on that. He seemingly is no different from the top 10 scorers regarding "consistency."

Draisitl 28 games with no goals; 51 in 42
Nylander, 42 games with no goals; 42 in 32
Thompson, 36 games with no goals; 39 in 32
Connor, 45 games with no goals; 38 in 30
Guentzel, 44 games with no goals; 38 in 29
Ovie, 27 games with no goals, 38 in 31
Point, 37 games with no goals, 38 in 32
Pastrnak, 45 games with no goals, 37 in 30
Reinhart, 44 games with no goals, 36 in 30
Schieffele, 47 games with no goals, 36 in 28

Kyrou, 49 games with no goals, 32 in 27

Goals are only one measure of production, and sometimes the "eye test" is a better evaluator.
