Did anyone see Jimmy 'the Cat' pregame interview with Brant Brown ?

Post by ramfandan »

Loves his explanation of 'time to slug and times to hit ' .
Also he stresses to players, Players do NOT hit home runs .. pitchers throw HR's ! Great line. Many Balls that fly out of the park are due to a pitcher hanging the curve ball or throwing one 'center cut ' on the plate.
It made me think of interview with Albert Pujols a few years ago when reporter asked him if he went up to bat thinking I am going to swing for a HR.
Pujols bristled , No, I am not a HR hitter . I go up to 'drive the ball ' hard .. Make hard barrel contact for line drives. Some of those hard hit balls leave the park . That comment by Albert spoke volumes about 'not swinging to hit a HR.

Unfortunately for Winn , he is trying to slug instead of 'hitting' right now. that 3rd at bat shows how impatient he is at the plate .. he struck out on 4 pitches with only ONE (the first one in the strike zone) 3 of the 4 pitches were balls. So instead of striking out on 4th pitch , he should have a 3-1 count and still be batting .
Sure can bet Brownie will be showing him video of that at bat stressing how much he is chasing and why he is strikng out so much . Really expanding the zone and pitchers are going to keep throwing balls there if he continues to flail at those. He is so anxious to get a hit , he is making it more difficult by swinging at bad pitches . Sure he can get lucky and hit a low inside pitch once in a while but won't happen often . Gotta swing at the good pitches NOT the bad ones

Unable to see the interview so thanks for summarizing!
Only 4 games but I am cautiously optimistic.
Obviously talent plays a key role in success.
For me....I’m looking at plate discipline.
Fingers crossed!

I don't believe Winn is swinging for the fences. In fairness, he's a young player who is struggling. It's the cliche that the count is 0-2 before he even gets in the box. So, he's pressing and swinging at bad pitches trying to make something happen. It's something that also happens to experienced hitters.

It might take a while but he'll come out of it. The more important question is, what will he learn from it?

I like what I've seen from our hitters. The new approach is very refreshing, they're just going up to do what they can do. Everyone loves doing damage, but often times you've got to set that up, it doesn't just happen. I love home runs, and there's no doubt that it's the most efficient way to put up runs on the board, but even the best home run hitters rarely hit them. I like that we're not shying away from them, but we're not going to live or die by them. I've been harping on that for years. If they happen--great. But I like that we're going for a more "score by any means necessary" approach. That's what teams like ours need to do.

Looking at Winn and Contreras--they're lagging a bit, but I'm not concerned. Contreras is squaring up the ball pretty well, but he's just not finding grass. It happens. From what I see, Winn's struggling more, but what I'm seeing is that he's getting himself out. He's pressing a little bit and not making good choices at the plate. But I'm confident he'll get it straightened out. Probably when some of the other bats start to cool a little bit.

Agreed. The easy answer is to say the kid is swinging for the fences.

I don't see that at all. I see a kid struggling to figure it out. I believe he will be fine.

I wonder if he lauded Paul Skenes by asserting "He could throw that speedball by you." https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/624701 ... days-dies/

The southwest MO radio station where I worked had a (ahem) "sports announcer"  who said this on the air: "(Player) was thrown out at home base for the final out, with the Cardinals losing by a score of four to five." :x  :(

Lot of things won't last, Herrea won't hit .400 and Willie won't go o for the season and Helsley won't have a FIP of minus 2.13 nor will Maton finish with FIP of minus .46

Don't think I've ever notice a minus FIP and here we have two. Bet it's pretty common early in season and I"ve just never noticed
