Post by hotrivets »

Blues on the main channel tonight. Snugs is in and Binner is between the pipes. Most likely MoJo is out.

From Korac:

Snuggerud, who had 24 goals and 27 assists in 40 games with the Golden Gophers this season, also will get time on the power play in the bumper.

Snuggerud said he’s played bumper, “A little bit. I’ve played it growing up with the national team a little bit. I’ve been in some scenarios up there, but it really makes it easy playing bumper when you’re with four other really good players out there, so it was really fun.”

As for using him as a bumper to start and not for the one-time threat, Montgomery said, “I don’t know, it’s the first time he’s probably been in a bumper, to be honest, and beggars can’t be choosers with the way our power play’s been. But that being said, he did a really good job there. He supported pucks well, you can tell his brain (that) he understands time and space. He’s a scorer and a shooter and those guys know how to get open. They’ve been getting open their whole lives. You could see his puck support and release are ideal for the bumper position.”

Honest question: In all the years of I have watch hockey [early 70's] and a Blues fan since '81 & STH 90-91, I've never heard the word 'Bumper." What is that?

The guy on the powerplay that is 10-15 feet or so out in the middle of the slot. Bolduc has been really good in that spot lately (see his goal in Colorado) and Oshie was great at it in Washington. Braden Point is good at it as well.

I don't know what anyone else would say, but minus Dvorsky amongst the forwards and Parayko on D, that lineup looks pretty good going forward!!

Put Dvo in for Sunny and you’d have the reincarnation of the old “kid line” back when it was Oshie-Perron-Berglund

Someone asked earlier about the “bumper” name in the power play…and all I could remember…for those old enough…was the old table hockey games that came out after the St. Louis/Boston Cup final in 1970…where you had a center-ice man lined up in the “bumper” position to ram home a puck when it was properly centered to him. Found memories of playing my Uncle and forcing him to be Boston while I mastered the game right in front of him with many a “bumper” goal for the St. Louis Blues! 😉

Thanks Frank, just what I thought it was but had never heard that term before. Appreciate it.

Definitely old enough to remember. The lever action hockey board game, I think by Cadaco. Remember the wooden puck? And then they "upgraded" with a plastic one with a ball bearing in the middle of it. Hated that puck. That version also had the attachable overhead scoreboard that you dropped the puck from. Anyway, the earlier version of that game was best, imo.

Great memories & a lot of fun playing that in the earlier years.

Didn't mean to get off track, but I too had never heard of the term "bumper" before in hockey & been following for many years.

Witha Rt Shot centern Bolduc may still get the easier and prettier passes. Snuggy (it IS weird typing that) might see better feeds on the PP.

Also it had the double player if you pulled the goalie.
