Herb Alpert & (New) Tijuana Brass Coming to St. Louis

Post by Pink Freud »

August 6, at the Touhill Center on the UMSL campus.

We attended his show recently as part of our 2025 RV journey, and it's hard to believe Herb turns 90 at the end of this month. He played lead trumpet on every one of his monster hits, plus a few solo songs, with a dynamite backup band as his "Tijuana Brass". His wife of 52 years, former Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 lead singer Lani Hall, 79, came out to sing 3 songs.

All during the nearly 2-hour show, the stage backdrop featured highlights from Herb's amazing career, including dozens of video cuts from his 1967 and '68 network TV specials, along with the tunes made even more famous by "The Dating Game" and Teaberry Gum commercials ("Mexican Shuffle").

I'm a little late with this response, mainly cuz I don't frequent this particular subforum. But today, on Herb's 90th birthday, I want to thank you Clark for mentioning and giving a little review of the show. I and some of my siblings have tickets for the St. Louis show in August and I've been wondering how much Herb would actually play.

It's great to hear that he is still lead trumpet at 90. I've heard that the band is terrific but I didn't know about his wife, and the backdrop thing sounds really cool too! Really looking forward to the show!

You'll be in for a great show! Herb still aces it, and his band is tops. Lani sings a couple of Sergio Mendes hits she long-ago sang lead on, and overall it's just a wonderful show....not wonderful for a 90-year-old, but for ANYONE. He's still got it. And yes, you'll love those backdrop videos.

Just a reminder to locals that Metrolink has two stops at UMSL; not sure which is closer to the Touhill Center.
