Hobey Baker Award

Post by bud white »

The ceremony is April 11. Snuggerud a finalist, though not a favorite.

So a quick quiz is in order ...

How many Hobey Baker winners have worn the Blue Note in an NHL game?

The answer may surprise you..

Loved when Sejna burst on the scene and scored against Roy. It was all downhill from there. :(

Only Paul Kariya a HOFer…the Hobey Baker Award is kind of like what the President’s Trophy is to NHL teams…it doesn’t guarantee success…just like ones’s college career success doesn’t mean anything to one’s NHL career success…just as success in a team’s regular season means nothing come playoffs! 😉

An accurate observation. But I think it could be changing rather quickly - especially with the new rules regarding CHL and NCAA. Of the recent winners, Makar, Caufield and Eichel are on their way to HOF status. Johnny Gaudreau was well on his way, too.

Fantilli and Celebrini too - they won it the last couple years. And Logan Cooley was a close 2nd behind Fantilli. College hockey is much higher caliber these days than it was say 20+ years ago. But still, there’s a difference if we’re talking a 20-22 year old winning it vs an 18 yr old freshman winning it. Or in Celebrini’s case, a 17 yr old winning it.

Were you surprised to see that Nodak forward go into transfer portal?

Not really. I assume you’re referring to Boisvert? NoDak has been surprisingly mid lately. I expected them to be better this season. They’re also losing Jayden Perron who also entered the portal.

With those 2 and Mac Swanson, they had 3 really top USHL players come in the last 2 seasons but they underperformed and EJ Emery completely stunk as a freshman - 0 goals, 1 assist on the entire season.

They’re adding Will Zellers next season though. He’s currently 1st in scoring in the USHL. Played with Ralph at Shattuck last year.

The Dakota kid going transfer may have been due to Brad Berry being let go.

Berry was there for almost 10 years, but haven't been to the dance in while. Granted, the competition has been getting tougher - but they should be much better - and the fans demand it.
