Yankees new bats

Post by Rocket Scientist »

New bat looks like bowling pin...
Second baseman Pablo Reyes, left fielder Jasson Dominguez, and center fielder Trent Grisham were the only Yankees starters who didn’t hit a home run through the first seven innings.

I used to have an old wooden bottle bat, like Ty Cobb and others used at times. But as I got older, I switched to a sleeker traditional one, like my heroes from the 50s and 60s used.

I once asked this board how many played any organized baseball and I was surprised by the low response. The fact that you stated you have owned bats makes you quite credible imo. You made me want to clean up my Larry Doby example.

These "torpedo bats" are finally giving batters a way to fight back against the howitzer-firing hurlers, who have evolved dramatically while the distance from the rubber to home plate hasn't changed in more than 100 years. The only surprise should be that it took this long for someone to finally realize how silly it was to have the fattest part of the bat on the very end with a slightly narrower sweet spot near the label.

MLB loves having more balls put into play than dozens of strikeouts, so don't be surprised to see the Powers That Be allow bats --- currently limited to a 2.61" (why that?) diameter --- to be even a bit thicker on the barrel next season.

God rest his soul, my Dad --- who knew nothing about baseball but knew I worshipped it --- went to Central Hardware when I turned 9 and brought me home a brand new Louisville Slugger and new glove. Just two problems: The bat was 33"/33 oz.; and the glove was a Regent (not my beloved Rawlings) catcher's mitt. Bless him, he meant well.

I actually tried to use that huge bat --- at age nine! --- in Baden Youth Association ballgames, not realizing that that size is of MLB caliber. A very caring coach taught me, if I was going to use that bat, to choke up. Not long after I opted for our team's 28/29-oz. clubs to face the monstrous pituitary cases with mustaches that were opposing pitchers.

I had a skinny handled 34”. Too big. But with only one sporting store in town, no Walmart or academy, I had to buy what they had. I was proud. I owned my own bat.

No bat bags. Stuck the bat handle thru the glove. Carried both as one.

That is abundantly clear. There is very little understanding how incredibly difficult the game is at higher levels. To even catch a bullpen of someone throwing 90+ is terrifying, especially if they're wild. Much less a 100 mph grounder heading your way. There is a certain level of appreciation missing. The understanding that the game especially from a hitters perspective is about dealing with failure. If you succeed 3 out of 10 times you are a stud, 2 out of 10 times you don't belong, 4 out of 10 times you're a god.
