Blues Goaltending
It has been spectacular; Hofer has been no slouch either!! Best tandem we’ve had since Hall and Plante!!
Re: Blues Goaltending
Halak / Elliott winning the Jennings was a good year too but yes, have a ton of faith in both Binny and Hofer.
Re: Blues Goaltending
Hofer was always good with the puck, but now he's been honing the craft alongside Binnington. That is critical because the D doesn't have to adjust based on who's in net. For example, with Husso, the Blues couldn't execute the same as they did with Binnington managing the puck.
A fast team made faster by the breakout and counter attack. Eliminating the forecheck.

Amen! Some of us have waiting for years for Army to pivot the roster nicely to see it happening

Re: Blues Goaltending
what's the chances EDM offers Hofer an offer sheet?
honestly, I think it'd be smart of em

Re: Blues Goaltending
If Army and the Schnoz want to keep Hofer, they won't let him hit RFA status for that to be an option
Re: Blues Goaltending
It comes down to does Binnington want a legacy deal to retire a Blue. If he does, then you're not signing Hofer long term or big money. He may want a chance to be a clear #1. If so, trade him and make a choice between Ellis and Zhrenko as to who is next. IMHO as usual.

Options. They have options. Potentially, still, all good options.TAFKAP wrote: ↑30 Mar 2025 13:44 pm It comes down to does Binnington want a legacy deal to retire a Blue. Respect your opinion of course but Joel behind the net makes me very nervous.bud white wrote: ↑30 Mar 2025 09:20 am Hofer was always good with the puck, but now he's been honing the craft alongside Binnington. He's trying hard to help the team, I get it, but he's no where near Jordans level of skill or capability back there, imo.
I think his biggest problem is the decision to go or not...and of course....getting back.
Re: Blues Goaltending
Im fine with hofer playing the puck. My bigger problem with hofer is his technique. When gets nervous ge goes to his knees immediately , but not only that, he crouches forward and down low and leaves so much of the top of the net open. For being a 6 ft 5 goalie, he can make himself look very small in net. Despite only being 6ft 2, binnington looks bigger even on his knees. Hofer needs to be more technically sound and get coaching on this.dhsux wrote: ↑30 Mar 2025 13:54 pmRespect your opinion of course but Joel behind the net makes me very nervous.bud white wrote: ↑30 Mar 2025 09:20 am Hofer was always good with the puck, but now he's been honing the craft alongside Binnington. Re: Blues Goaltending
To be fair, Binnington may be the best in the league right now - easily top 5. So it's not fair to judge him against Binner. And granted, there's been a few hiccups, but overall, he's been very good. He doesn't hvae the "eyes in the back of his head" as Binnington does. I mean, he just has a terrific short game.dhsux wrote: ↑30 Mar 2025 13:54 pmRespect your opinion of course but Joel behind the net makes me very nervous.bud white wrote: ↑30 Mar 2025 09:20 am Hofer was always good with the puck, but now he's been honing the craft alongside Binnington. Re: Blues Goaltending
Anyone know how Ellis and Zhrenko are at playing the puck? It's such a valuable skill for this team.

I don’t know about that. Greg Millen and the practice plywood with 5 holes were pretty good.Bluesbacker wrote: ↑30 Mar 2025 06:22 am It has been spectacular; Hofer has been no slouch either!! Best tandem we’ve had since Hall and Plante!!

Re: Blues Goaltending
We've come a long way since the days when goalies were coaching to stand on their feet to make a save and stay in the net.
I'm sure the Blues are working very hard with their guys in the A to develop their puck management skills. Frankly, it has become as important a skill in the pro game as being able to skate. And given how good these guys have become at developing this skill, I would expect the trapezoid to be eliminated soon. The org is building their breakout on this skill.
Let's face it, the trap was essentially the "Marty rule". It was focused on Brodeur and Turco. Those two were on aanother planet back in the day.

There is a funny story in the book "The Game" by Ken Dryden.Hazelwood72 wrote: ↑30 Mar 2025 17:51 pmI don’t know about that. Sometimes during "optionals" goalies wouldn't dress out fully, and the team would hang up the "board" It would become a running joke ..
"Are the goalies going to dress out or do we just the board today?"
"Nah ... have them dress out. You can't make the board scream when you hit it."
