New Snow White criticism
CNN gets it wrong IMHO:
“It also didn’t help that “Snow White” garnered attention for all of the wrong reasons ahead of its release. The musical and children’s movie somehow found itself in the crosshairs of a culture war over the titular casting of Rachel Zegler, an American actor of Colombian descent, as well as the Israel-Hamas war with the casting of Gal Gadot, who had a mandated service in the Israeli army, as the “Evil Queen.” Then there was the reimagining of the Seven Dwarfs as magical creatures, drawing criticism from “Game of Thrones” actor Peter Dinklage.”
At no point does CNN acknowledge the real reason traditional fans want no part of this movie: it’s the trashing of the original story, by Zegler in particular, and removing the central story line like true love is a plague to be avoided. I could care less they cast a Hispanic person as Snow White. I don’t think anyone can mistake her as the most beautiful woman in the world though, so casting wasn’t the best. Especially when she’s opposite Gal Gadot. But it’s Zegler’s mouth and disrespect that is the central issue. Not her race. Had she shown reverence for the original, instead of disdain, people would not be reacting this way.
It was one of the most beloved and old stories in movie history. Disney trashed it, and now they’re going to pay for it both financially and it’s yet another hit on its reputation.

It is sort of inevitable that fairy tales, which represent trad/archaic gender roles, have a tough sell being re-packaged - hew to the old, you are trying to re-foist a patrimony, add modern feminist gender roles, much of the charm of the originals, for many, is lost in ensuring the 'empowerment', which often is expressed as turning the mensfolk into some manner of stooges - even the 'heroes'.
My sense is that for many of us, neither approach is satisfying - on the one side, anachronism, on the other, stridency/tendentiousness.
Life got (more) complicated. Much of it is only semi-digested.

I think the key is, especially when it’s a classic, to do it respectfully. It’s ok to add to it modern elements. But, this one went out of its way to essentially trash the original. When the actress playing Snow White is the main culprit in interviews, etc throwing shade at the original, that is just not going to play well with the public.MikoTython wrote: ↑25 Mar 2025 16:54 pm It is sort of inevitable that fairy tales, which represent trad/archaic gender roles, have a tough sell being re-packaged - hew to the old, you are trying to re-foist a patrimony, add modern feminist gender roles, much of the charm of the originals, for many, is lost in ensuring the 'empowerment', which often is expressed as turning the mensfolk into some manner of stooges - even the 'heroes'.

Sure there are those out there who don’t care. But as we’re seeing at the box office, a movie that could have been an absolute hit has been a dud. This should be a lesson to Disney, and anyone making this kind of movie. Something is beloved for a reason. Stick to what worked the 1st time.

I think the original Snow White didn’t denigrate people with dwarfism, but not having seen the new Snow White, I’m not sure what they did with that part of the story. If they butchered that up too, that’s just par for the course with this film.

You're whining like a baby. Snow White has been irrelevant for at least an entire generation at this point... "fans" of the dumb story which is not even really a feature-length film should be thrilled just that people are talking about it at all.Armchair QB wrote: ↑26 Mar 2025 06:46 amI think the key is, especially when it’s a classic, to do it respectfully. How long is a feature-length film? The 1937 original was 83 minutes, the newest is 109 minutes.3dender wrote: ↑26 Mar 2025 07:43 amYou're whining like a baby. Re: New Snow White criticism
Completely different genre, but let’s look at King Kong. Another classic. The movie was re-made in 2005. There were obviously new ideas introduced that were not in the original. It took full advantage of modern technology. But, it did nothing to disrespect the original and for the most part stuck to the main story. I loved it. I thought it was a very cool movie.
As I recall Naomi Watts didn’t trash the idea of a damsel in distress being lugged around by a big male ape, and twist it into some kind of weird narrative. That was the story, and that’s what they portrayed.
Simple.
Please, make more movies like that. I’m ready for Jaws to be re-made. Correctly. That could be a huge hit.

Re-read what you wrote. If you think that is what most people think about this situation, then we need to be done talking. You don’t seem to be from the same planet.
Remember, we have actual evidence. The movie is a flop and financial catastrophe so far. That doesn’t scream people are blowing off the controversy. A movie this big, most every parent with small children would flock to the theatre to see it if it weren’t controversial.

Oh I think Disney anticipated it being a huge success. They dumped a fortune into this one. They don’t do that without an idea it will be a popular movie. So Disney makes a terrible decision with their Snow White, who is a loose canon. It’s a shame because she’s actually very talented. She might be unemployable though because of her lack of professionalism and mouth, except for a very narrow genre of movie that you’d probably like.
In the 1st place, Disney really allowed the story to be too much of a departure from the original, which wouldn’t be popular anyway. Then there’s the whole dwarf drama, which was an unnecessary self-inflicted wound for Disney.
Re: New Snow White criticism
Don’t get me wrong. I think Snow White sucks, even the original. But it definitely is not irrelevant. If it were, then why would Disney spend hundreds of mil to reboot this in the first place? People have heard of Snow White. It is an iconic animated movie. Mirror mirror on the wall, come on, how many times do people reference that line? The actress really screwed up and apparently Disney is (upset) at her. I don’t really care to share the links, but her little press tour (bleep) everything up and the movie has been doing terribly at the box office. People don’t like to be preached to. Especially over a story about dwarfs, mirrors and apples.

Just gonna point out that if you're only blaming one of the two leads, and not the one who routinely speaks out in defense of genocide and even sparked a modest boycott over the film (BDS), you may not be considering all the factors.
As far as relevance I think we just have different definitions. But Disney spending millions on something isn't evidence for that thing being relevant. Otherwise all of the Marvel and Star Wars shows wouldn't have been notorious duds. Their honchos aren't infallible and their tactic of squeezing every last drop out of their cash cows is bound to fail eventually.
Re: New Snow White criticism
If we’re talking about pop culture, I would say relevance means people know what it is. If you ask most people if they’ve heard of Snow White or Marvel or Star Wars … yes, they’ve heard of them. So it makes sense that Disney is gonna try to make more money on these types of projects.3dender wrote: ↑29 Mar 2025 17:33 pmMost of what I can say in my defense will likely get this thread locked.DJ Davis wrote: ↑29 Mar 2025 16:54 pmDon’t get me wrong. Same with hi ho, hi ho.3dender wrote: ↑26 Mar 2025 07:43 amYou're whining like a baby.
My sense is that for many of us, neither approach is satisfying - on the one side, anachronism, on the other, stridency/tendentiousness.
Life got (more) complicated. Much of it is only semi-digested.
Sure there are those out there who don’t care. But as we’re seeing at the box office, a movie that could have been an absolute hit has been a dud. This should be a lesson to Disney, and anyone making this kind of movie. Something is beloved for a reason. Stick to what worked the 1st time.
There are a lot of films, shows, bands, etc. I really like, then I talk to people about them, and they’ve never even heard of them. Severance is actually one of those, which kinda surprises me. I guarantee you, all the people who told me they’ve never heard of Severance know Snow White.
As far as the leads, did Gadot go out there on press tours for this film and make comments like Zegler did? Was she as confrontational as Zegler was?
Maybe she did and I just didn’t see it. If the answer is no, then you have to admit, I hope, that Zegler was being confrontational on purpose and trying to stir up [shirt]. No matter what it obviously didn’t do her any favors.
