Happy Birthday, Cy

Post by jcgmoi »

Cy Young was born on this date in 1867. His full name was Denton True Young. Cy was short for Cyclone, which says a lot about how his fellow players saw him.

Second favorite Cy Young quote:
Too many pitchers, that's all, there are just too many pitchers Ten or twelve on a team. Don't see how any of them get enough work. Four starting pitchers and one relief man ought to be enough. Pitch 'em every three days and you'd find they'd get control and good, strong arms.
That quote is from 1951 and its sentiments were decades out of fashion even then. Still, I sympathize.

Favorite Cy Young quote:
All us Youngs could throw. I used to kill squirrels with a stone when I was a kid, and my granddad once killed a turkey buzzard on the fly with a rock.
Those were the days.

I'll end with a trivia question. The answer is easy to find but I'd be impressed if anyone knew it off-hand.

Every fan knows how many games Cy Young won but how many did he save?

Happy 158th, Cy. The squirrel quote sounds like my Dad's stories from NE Missourah. He had a great arm but had to use a .22 for squirrels.

Thanks for the quotes. Very much appreciated and refreshing to read. Curious now but didn’t want to be a sick and lookup the answer. But he’s a man that probably saved everyone one his own starts and beyond. But just a guess that to at least 50ish ???

Glad y'all appreciated the quotes.

Cy Young had 18 saves** in his career.

His first came in 1891 when he was a 24 yo pitching for the Cleveland Spiders. He went 27-22 that year over 423 innings but still found time for 2 saves.

His last save was in 1908 as a 41 yo pitching for the Boston Red Sox. He was 21-11 with 2 more saves and a 1.26 ERA. His concession to age was that he pitched only 299 innings.

** As most of you know, there was no official statistic for saves prior to the 1969 season. Young's save totals have been retroactively assigned by the good folks at Baseball-Reference.
