Keys to STL future

Post by AZ_Cardsfan »

Opening day always starts one thinking what does the future behold for our beloved Cards. And while I am low on 2025 I am hopeful they are taking the right steps revamping scouting and development (as they promised) and begin producing higher end players.

But what are the keys to 2026 and near term? IMO:

Walker - How can we forget he was ranked #4 prospect in all of baseball back in 2023. A first round pick (21) his bat was his calling card and a power hitter was assured. Well, something went off the rails. But he is still just 22 and IMO his having a break out is one of the primary best bets for STL to push back into the ranks of contender. He must become that MOTO imposing bat for STL to succeed the next few years. I have no idea if that will happen.

Gorman - also actually still young. But closing on bust territory. He was #33 ranked in 2021 and also was a 21st pick. He has not only not progressed he regressed last year. One wonders is it a development flaw in the organization or what? But if he and Walker both became sluggers they would be set #3-4 for several years.

Weatherholt - One hopes whatever has gone wrong with the first two doesn't impact him. He could emerge as soon as July as an everyday player. And one with upside. PLEASE let it be so.

Saggese - I get a kick out of people who write off young players too soon and some here have in this case. I think he has potential to be an everyday player. Problem is we seem to have too many middle infield types. Well, let the bats play and figure it out. I think he gets another look in Sept and contends for a role in 2026.

Mathews, Hence, Hjerpe, McGreevy, Roby - I see probably two solid rotation pieces coming from this group. But reality is STL needs ONE TOR guy to be a threat in the playoffs. Not sure if one is in this group. Maybe they draft him in the next go round with #5 pick.

Probably missed someone important so feel free up add to this list and....

Play ball.
