Scheduling should not be this hard

Post by Bob39 »

If we are going to measure the standings through aggregate points, the NHL should be able to create a schedule that keeps the teams playing roughly the same number of games at any given time. I totally understand that throughout the year a team is going to get a game ahead or behind for a day or two. However, there is no reason that one team should have three games in hand on another team and have that difference stretch for multiple weeks. The schedule should be created so that by every other Saturday, all teams are on the same number of games played. It would not be that hard to do and would be far more fair. What is the argument against it?

You know, there's a lot of competiting for dates at the Calgary Saddledome, you know. Livestock shows, Bryan Adams tribute tours, and the like.

It would be a lot harder than you think, the league is not in total control of venues. When the Blues season ends Vancouver and Calgary each have one game left, that's pretty close. It would be better if everyone's season ended on the same date but that ship sailed when the league had an odd number of teams.

The problem was that Calgary had to reschedule their game with the Kings to the end of the season because of the wildfires.

All the more reason to keep the teams as close as possible.

Either way flames fans are as annoyed as we since both teams are incapable of losing right now. Theoretically this can't go on forever. If it does, Minnesota may end up on the outside looking in.

What does it matter? You play to win the games and each team is playing 82. It doesn't matter if someone has played fewer or more games at any given moment because the only thing that matters is how many points you have at the end. Frankly I'm happy the Blues have a lighter schedule going into a potential playoff run.

I think if you asked the Blues they'd have rather not had 4 sets of back to back in March. That is ridiculous. Calgary had 2 and they were spread out and has none down the stretch. Schedule wise, we had the toughest schedule even if the competition might not have been quite as strong. Good thing for us we somehow gutted out some wins are tired legs!!! Last night showed what we can do with fresher legs! Hopefully we keep on rolling!

I don't think every other Saturday could ever work, but I could see maybe having a few checkpoints throughout the year where everyone needs to be within a game or so of each other. That could keep it from getting too far out of hand.

But they can't really predict things like having to postpone LA games due to the wildfires.

If I were a Flame, I also wouldn't have wanted to go near LA during fire season.

Calgary has Colorado and Utah back to back on the road still yet.

What irks me the most are the back-to-backs, really makes it unfair in some scenarios.

My guess is AI hasn't reached Bettman's brain yet.

I always thought it would be cool to have a consecutive 3 game series against the same opponent throughout the season, kind of like what the MLB does.

Scheduling is very, very hard.

Tenant sharing, circuses, Taylor Swift concerts, frozen fours, political events, etc makes scheduling even harder.

Natural disasters and weather events f-ing with a completed schedule makes it (bleep) near impossible.

There's 11 teams with 70 games played and 3 with 73.
