Siani is far more likely to cost the team with his terrible offense late in games than win games with his glove late in games. He will also get his share of starts and you can pretty much pencil him in for an 0 for on those daysrockondlouie wrote: ↑25 Mar 2025 08:52 amNone whatsoever
This idiotic "I'd rather have him here for late inning defense over a backup SS or M. Koperniak" line of thinking is just plain stupid on a team in dire need of OFFENSE w/no true backup SS.
Acting like Siani is going to save multiple games w/his late inning defense is a stretch since he MAY, MAY make one or two catches a year, in the late innings that helps win a game.
He's NOT worth wasting a roster spot for that one or two MAYBE games when you could have a kid like Koperniak on the roster who can actually hit or Fermin as a backup SS who could spell Winn when he needs a day off.
Siani is a waste of a roster spot, shouldn't even be in MLB.

Re: Siani isn't blocking anyone
Good post. All teams need utility. That’s Siani. I would rather the others get more playing time in minors at this point. I think they potentially show more promise.ecleme22 wrote: ↑24 Mar 2025 23:37 pm For those who wish "X" players were brought up to the OD roster instead of Siani, see Baker, Walker and Burleson.
THOSE are the players you should be mad at.
Why? Because those are the players the org is going to take a long look at the first 4-to-8 weeks of the season. THOSE are the players who would block Barrero, Kop and others from playing time.
Siani merely supports the roster choices above.
Now, you don't like it? You want Barrero and Kop to get chances? Just wait.
Was Donovan on the 2022 OD roster? No. Did he make a big difference on the 2022 team? Yeah.
Just wait...It's only the OD roster. It's not forever....

Your response, probably: "They will split time with X player!"
Me: The team, for now, wants to give the current roster all the playing time.
Can that change? Yes. Will it change? Probably. But to OPEN the season, they're not interested in AB, LB or JW splitting time...

You think more time in the minors is going to change who Barrero is? Barrero is a utility player by definition. Plus defense at CF/SS and the ability to play 6 different positions at the MLB level. A RH bat on the bench for a team that is LH dominant.
The notion that a high ceiling/low floor lottery ticket like Barrero needs consistent playing time in the minors is absurd.

The plan is we will be leading late, or why else use him. That’s fallacy one- leading often late. Next bingo you said it. Once he enters, he’s there. We go extras, he hits.hmoss859 wrote: ↑25 Mar 2025 00:05 am It seems to me a waste of a roster spot for strictly a defensive replacement
The fact that Jordan Walker is a butcher in field should not guarantee Sinai a roster spot.
Koperniak should have that spot or Fermin
Unintended consequence - Sinai can’t hit a kick and will be left in games where his AB might come around in the clutch
Re: Siani isn't blocking anyone
Sorry you disagree. And who knows you might be right. My expectations for the year are very low. I’m just not getting knotted up on utility positions. But players with more than utility potential should not be on the bench in St Louis.Basil Shabazz wrote: ↑25 Mar 2025 09:30 amYou think Siani qualifies as a utility player?Jatalk wrote: ↑25 Mar 2025 09:26 amGood post. What I am upset about is how this organization gets stacked with low potential players taking up spots on the roster.

Only 780 players on teams 26 man roster, half pitchers. How then, does the mediocre sift down into STL. The pool of 390 position players is available to all teams.Jatalk wrote: ↑25 Mar 2025 09:42 amSorry you disagree. And who knows you might be right. My expectations for the year are very low. Last I looked:
-VSII won a MiLB Gold Glove playing CF
-Donovan won a Utility Gold Glove (more so for his play in the OF where he was a +4 DRS vs 2B where he was a -3 DRS that season)
-Noot is a well above average RF (+9 DRS from 2022-2024)
NO NEED for a late inning glove only hitter wasting a roster spot that Koperniak earned or Fermin who could spell Winn when he needs a day off as well as give Oli a solid PH'er.
Siani is a waste of a roster spot, only there because of Oli's mancrush on him.
Re: Siani isn't blocking anyone
He did have twice the SB of anyone else on the roster in half the time played, more value as a PR than defensive replacement. Still more appealing additions in hand though.
Re: Siani isn't blocking anyone
Poor talent evaluation combined with poor player development combined with poor roster management.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑25 Mar 2025 09:46 amOnly 780 players on teams 26 man roster, half pitchers. Re: Siani isn't blocking anyone
Siani is blocking Mozeliak's and Marmol's memories of last year.
Re: Siani isn't blocking anyone
If I'm Kop, I'm looking to bolt first chance I get.
Re: Siani isn't blocking anyone
Siani is a better defender than BD, AB and JW. So him being on the roster right now makes sense. Also, you have to ask yourself "why would an org put a guy on the roster who plays so little?"rockondlouie wrote: ↑25 Mar 2025 09:52 amI don't get these guys defending this stupid roster move.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑25 Mar 2025 08:57 amSiani is far more likely to cost the team with his terrible offense late in games than win games with his glove late in games. Answer: Because the org wants the OTHER players to get the majority of PT, for now...
The org wants to see Walker/VS/Noot in the OF RIGHT NOW. And then, see what happens in the relatively near future.
Lastly, keep in mind, ALL OF THIS could change. Remember VS and Walker's '24 Aprils? Remember Noot getting hurt a bunch? It's just opening day.
One more thing: To say Siani is on the roster because of a 'mancrush' from Oli is dumb. Oli merely started Siani so much last year because he had no other options...
