Carnegie Deli Exporting Its Corned Beef & Pastrami to Costco

Initially, starting in March, there will be only 50 Costco stores, all in the northeast, carrying the Carnegie Deli meats, priced at about $18 for a pound and a half. If those sales go well, they'll spread to other Costco stores.

My one and only time in NYC I ate at Carnegie Deli and had the Woody Allen, a sandwich stack of both of those smoked meats, 7" high in the center, served with assorted pickles and spicy rudeness by the servers. YUMMY!

Just a few blocks away was Al Yegenah's Soup Kitchen, the inspiration for the "Seinfeld" Soup Nazi, but it was closed for the night when I went by.

"The Carnegie Deli was a Jewish delicatessen, formerly a chain, based in New York City. Its main branch, opened in 1937 near Carnegie Hall, was located at 854 7th Avenue (between 54th and 55th Streets) in Midtown Manhattan. It closed on December 31, 2016.[1][2] There is one branch still in operation at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, and the deli still operates a wholesale distribution service.[note 1]"

For those of us who love smoked meats, I demur to an episode of "Dirty Jobs", in which host Mike Rowe takes an assignment at the Seltzer's Lebanon Bologna plant in Pennsylvania. It's a genuine all-natural bologna, spiced and smoked for three days in their own smokehouse --- which poor Rowe had to clean out --- and tasted nothing like the bologna I've always enjoyed, but better: More like pastrami than bologna. https://tinyurl.com/2wsxhed4

Bologna is generally highly-processed meat from low-quality sources and should be eaten in moderation alongside a balanced diet of fruits and vegetables. The World Health Organization has classified processed meat as a Group 1 carcinogenic, alongside cigarettes and alcohol

Made a pastrami rub and smoked some corned beef brisket on St. Patrick's Day weekend. Turned out pretty (bleep) good.

First time ever this year I did corned beef (flat) on my Pit Boss pellet smoker. It turned out excellent!!

Yeah, I don't know if they keep the stuff in the supermarket year-round, but I think this might be one of my new go-tos. If not, maybe I'll just buy a few around St Patrick's Day and freeze them. I'm too lazy and I don't have enough refrigerator room to corn them myself, and I think these pre-packaged flats work just fine.

My new experiment is I'm going to smoke a hot salami chub from Gioa's. Just picked one up today, so hopefully we'll be trying it soon

I live in California but have been to a Costco in the Vancouver area and saw Schwartz’s Mo treat Smoked meat there and wondered, will US customs allow me to bring this back.

For the uninitiated, Montreal Smoked Meat is great! Is it pastrami, is it corned beef or simply different than both? I don’t know but it is wonderful stuff.

A pastrami is much more labor intensive, considering the brining, spicing and smoking/aging. Plus, pastrami and corned beef are still beef and subject to the same price pressure as all other beef. "Highly processed", to me, refers to food with multiple additives like dyes, preservatives, sweeteners etc. Cured meats have been undergoing the same methods for hundreds of years. And they taste SO GOOD!
