DeNiro...and DeNiro Star in Barry Levinson's New Mafia Bomb

Post by Pink Freud »

I had really been looking forward to seeing "The Alto Knights", the attempt by Barry Levinson to be Martin Scorsese. Just off the bat.....

DeNiro portrays both Mob bosses Frank Costello and his once-friendly, now bitter enemy Vito Genovese.
What does that title mean to most people? Alto Knights? Is that a minor-league baseball team? A weekend medieval cosplay group?
Cincinnati stands in for 1950s Noo Yawk.
The story was written by "Wiseguy" author Nicholas Pileggi, age 92.
Dual star DeNiro is 81.
Director Levinson turns 83 in a few weeks.
Producer Irwin Winkler is 93.
Cinematographer Dante Spinotti is 81.
Film critic David Ehrlich says it's "the last shot of "The Irishman" stretched out to 123 inert minutes."

Yes, the film's energy and passion, judging from numerous reviews in Rotten Tomatoes and www.mrqe.com , reflect the elderly wax works who made it. I'll skip the theater visit and wait for it to stream.

I saw the trailer the other night. What's the explanation for why it makes sense to have DeNiro play both roles? Cause it was baffling to me while I watched it.

Baffling and distracting, according to several critics on www.mrqe.com . Just imagine how much time poor DeNiro had to spend in the makeup chair. I'm picturing a modern-day Wally Westmore asking him "OK, which character are we doing this time?", or Tom Courtenay slapping Albert Finney's dark greasepaint hand in "The Dresser", declaring "No! No! No! Not Othello!!".

The shame is, this riveting true story --- two Noo Yawk mob bosses who made their bones as close friends, then became bitter foes --- didn't need any gimmicks. I have no idea why Barry Levinson opted for double-DeNiro. Nice to see Debra Messing stretching dramatically as Costello's J.A.P. wife.

Heck, I'm a sucker for any Mafia movies, even if Cincinnati portrays NYC, so after reading better reviews in the NYT and Variety I'll probably shell out $6 this weekend to see it where it belongs: On a theater screen.

Weekday (especially morning) matinees for seniors are cheap, and wonderful. No (bleep) kids, and no teens/20-somethings on their phones. I'm meeting a friend Monday morning for "The Alto Knights".
