Cards should consider signing Kyle Gibson for innings

Post by Cardly »

Kyle Gibson could go to the extended spring training and brought onto the big league roster when he is ready. They will need him. Gray seems hurt. Matz is likely an injury in waiting. They need innings to go with the younger guys. Sign Gibson, you won’t regret it!

He cost around $7-9 mm, I'd guess. They appear comfortable with McGreevy sixth, Liberatore seventh, and I presume Graceffo eighth. Their rotation depth looks OK. If injuries hit and they need someone to cover innings maybe they come back to him or another vet. But now I think they are happy to save money.

Oddly enough, The 2 most talked about possible signings for the Cardinals all off-season are both still unsigned.
Kyle Gibson and David Robertson.
Makes you think...

I really like Gibson.
Was hoping he’d be back but the only way that was happening was if either Matz and/or Mikolas was dealt.

If this is it for Gibson, he's someone I'd hope the organization would consider bringing back in some sort of coaching role.

No. Players waiting in the minors for their turn.

Why? To take innings from younger player?

And why not? By all accounts, he was a big factor in getting what we got out of Pallante. Smart guy, been around the block, and if we're (hopefully) going young in the pitching department, why not go with someone who's been there, but also understands how the modern game is played? I'm not saying he's got to be the pitching coach, but a roving one? Where's the harm?

Lots of harm...he's not a coach.
Enough with players who once took a [shirt] for Cards. New eyes, ears, and coaching.

Cardinals have too many starters and not enough rotation spots already. They are talking 6 man rotation because they want all of them starting if they sign Gibson they will need to go with a 7 man to get them all in the rotation

...he coached Pallante.

I understand not wanting the old pals act, I don't either, but for advisory positions and roving instructors? There is no harm. I'm not asking him to put a team together.

Because we already have enough older guys that don’t fit in to the future in front of young kids like Mcgreevy and Matthews mind you that none of us even want in the rotation over them. Nothing against Gibson, he did fine last year. But he just gets in the way of the youth movement. And Mo failed to make spots for any of them, not that it would shock me, but he would be beyond stupid to make it worse. If/when guys go down those spots need to be filled by young pitchers
