2024 draft missed opportunities: Jac Caglianone
Just checking on the ST progress of the players selected before our lottery number came up. Hagen Smith has a respectable 0.00 ERA but only 3 IP. Several others have been used sparingly if at all. But Jac at KC is OPSing 1.872 over 22 PAs with 3 HRs. He also had 5 HRs in AFL. He might be the first of his draft class to make a MLB impact.

KC picked before us at #6, so there's only 5 teams that might have missed an opportunity.... His EV's were insane at UF. The chase rate out of the zone was/is always the issue.
I still think Nick Kurtz and J.J. Wetherholt will be the best two hitters from that draft. With Bazzana giving them a run for their money.

I know - I'm not saying we missed by picking JJ. I'm saying we missed out vs the pre-lottery days with the random lottery process sticking us at 7 and not higher. Our odds had us at 5th, which should have given us a choice between Smith and Jac.craviduce wrote: ↑17 Mar 2025 13:34 pmKC picked before us at #6, so there's only 5 teams that might have missed an opportunity.... This year it worked out in our favor, big surprise. I just hope we can capitalize at a frachise player level.

we missed out on the lottery, that one hurt a bit. We cashed in our Karma the next season winning the lottery with the 5th pickCarp4Cy wrote: ↑17 Mar 2025 13:39 pmI know - I'm not saying we missed by picking JJ. just have to have a "Franchise Player" available, I think this draft is short on those...this draft seems to have a lot of players with Great peripherals except in 1 area...."Player has 4 tools, but the swing and miss is a concern" "Player has 4 tools, but lacks power".
It's mainly why I'm heavily considering a Pitcher to anchor our rotation, or a Highschool SS with power.
Re: 2024 draft missed opportunities: Jac Caglianone
Yeah - if we could select a Hunter Greene or Spencer Strider type, that would certainly change the direction of the Franchise.craviduce wrote: ↑17 Mar 2025 13:41 pmwe missed out on the lottery, that one hurt a bit. I'm still not particularly sold on Caglianone.
But as for this draft, they really got to get it right. They need to go as big as possible with the first pick. Because we ain't getting inside the top 10 after this season, no matter how bad we are.

They also need to go big in the international this go around. It's great to spread the money around but right now I think they need to go for one top guy. I have no idea who that is but we don't really need another dozen maybesStrummer Jones wrote: ↑17 Mar 2025 14:01 pm I'm still not particularly sold on Caglianone.

I read this a few weeks ago on another forum, and I've never heard it confirmed...but the Cards "May", and I stress "May", have a verbal agreement with a Top 10 IFA prospect Emmanuel Luna, OF. This is according to Eric Longenhagen (I'm not familiar with him, he's from Fangraphs, and I read this information on TCN free forums) ....take this for what it's worth....could be a nothing burger. But I thought about it when I read Horse Traders post. That would be a different approach in the IFA signing period, big splash contract.HorseTrader wrote: ↑17 Mar 2025 14:21 pmThey also need to go big in the international this go around. Yup, I agree with that, too. I can see a situation where we don't even need to spend more money as a franchise, just spend it more wisely. Instead of spending 2 million each on five guys, who COULD be what we need, why not spend 10 million on ONE guy who WILL be what we need? Something like that. Obviously not apples-to-apples with international spending, because reasons. But you know.HorseTrader wrote: ↑17 Mar 2025 14:21 pmThey also need to go big in the international this go around. Light on details.
Re: 2024 draft missed opportunities: Jac Caglianone
Probably good that we didn’t have an opportunity at Caglione. Mo and Oli would have him working at 3b and…. yes I know he throws with his left arm.

I think that "luck" and "wisdom/proper vetting" go hand-in-hand.thetank2 wrote: ↑17 Mar 2025 16:49 pmInstead of more wisely, how about get more lucky?Strummer Jones wrote: ↑17 Mar 2025 15:50 pmYup, I agree with that, too. How is this a missed opportunity? He wasn't available at the Cards pick?
