James

Post by edwin drood »

I'm only halfway through the book and its fascinating. Rights have been purchased by Amblin Partners, Steven Spielberg to exec produce, tentative director Taika Waititi.

Author is Percival Everett, professor of English at USC. The book won the National Book Award and NYT 10 Best of 2024.

Summary: James is a reimagining of Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, with the slave Jim as narrator. The original book is considered one of the seminal novels in American literature.

Memory refresher: Set in St. Petersburg Missouri (Hannibal), Huck and his best bud Tom Sawyer, have come into a considerable sum of money - $6,000 each - after finding a thief's loot. Currently in the care the Widow Douglas, Huck's abusive alcoholic father, Pap, is in town, smelling money. Meanwhile, Jim overhears his owner mention she's thinking of selling Jim to a New Orleans buyer. Jim takes off for Jackson's Island where he meets up with Huck who has just escaped a severe beating and imprisonment by Pap. And the trip down the Mississippi begins.

An excellent read as James (Jim), actually highly literate and well read, unbeknownst to his white owners, and Huck head towards freedom and safety. A fascinating and thought provoking read.

Can't imagine the casting. In the book Jim is a black adult, Huck is about 14 and white. Anyway, I'll definitely see this one.

Huck doesn't have the money with him ($6000 btw, not $12000). It's in an interest bearing account, paying Huck the princely sum of $1 per week. Nor did I mention that James even knows about Huck's money. But please feel free to think that the negro would, of course, steal the money. He was, after all, a shiftless, ignorant slave. Your St. Louis roots are showing. Could slaves read and write? Ask your idol, Mr. Trumpstain,. He's heard that Fredrick Douglas is doing some great things. Then, if still curious, look into Venture Smith, another uppity blackie.

You said 6 grand each between Tom and Huck. That'd be 12 grand total. Ah yes, because Mr Douglass could read and write, that means ALL of his brothas n sistas were secret scholars. If it simply weren't for the yt system and yt man. A good writer/director with balls would make something about William Ellison.
