Maton isn't going to make this team a WS contender.

He isn't going to speed up the "refresh/reload" or whatever they call their payroll purge.

And he isn't going to bring back anything significant if traded mid season.
Not necessarily. Luis Garcia fetched LAA four prospects from the Red Sox system, and Maton and Garcia are on pretty even footing from a production standpoint. The Orioles sent Philly their No. 8 prospect (Seth Johnson) along with a high-ceiling prospect (Moises Chace) for half a season of Gregory Soto, who profiles worse than Maton. Those are just a couple of 2024 deadline returns on relievers.
OR... you could see what ACTUAL Phil Maton was worth in a trade in 2024, which was cash considerations or a player to be named later.

I can't find anything that says the Rays got a player in return for him.

Mo loves him some soft tossing dudes... :?

Dislike this signing... also cause his dad is a liar and crook... but I should let that be. We're not supposed to hold a parent's misdeeds against their kids.
Do tell.
His dad was a CEO of a bank in Springfield, IL... made some bad loans and covered it up by taking payments from customers in good standing and applying them to the deals he personally signed off on. He pretended to have integrity and let people walk out the door who uncovered it, basically letting people think the idea was absurd. He then abruptly resigned when the owner wanted to take a peak under the covers.

It's very possible Maton gets nothing at the deadline. But, hey, maybe cash considerations can get us closer to that pitching lab

Anyway, I'm not saying this is a franchise-altering acquisition that catapults the team into contention. I've punted on 2025, so in my mind, they can either run the Bailey Horns of the world out there or a guy who might be able to contribute toward getting talent that can help the org in 2026 and beyond. The odds of Maton doing that over Bailey Horn are slightly higher in my opinion.

Yes, especially for a non-contender like the '25 Cardinals.

Because it's a short term move for a team that isn't gonna be competitive in the short term.

Essentially, the Cardinals are rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

I bet you said this in 2008, 2010 , 2018, etc.

You aren't influential.

A 2 million dollar guarantee for one year. That’s not a whole lot above the league minimum. How’s that not a good deal for a pretty good bullpen arm. He takes Kittredge spot at a fraction of the cost.

Sigh....

Please research the "Chapman for Ragans" trade 2 years ago.

Thanks...

How did Mo average 90 wins from 2008-2022?

That's for sure. The FO doesn't give a hot dam about what I think.

BTW: The Titanic reference is overly dramatic, but the idea is right. Adding a street free agent short man is going to have zero effect on the outcome of the 2026 season.

That should say 2025 season.

You've lost me here. Are you comparing Maton to Aroldis Chapman?

Sticking with the nautical theme: That's a bit like comparing the SS Minnow to the Queen Mary.

How did the last reliever we signed at the end of spring training workout?
