Oscar Nom Cynthia Erivo ("Wicked") To Star as Jesus in "J. C. Superstar"

She's cast as the lead in 3 performances in early August of "Jesus Christ Superstar" at the Hollywood Bowl --- start your stopwatch for evangelicals' protests of Jesus as a black and a woman --- and she'll host the 2025 Tony Awards in June. Of course, she's up for Best Actress at the Oscars Mar. 2nd. Then in November the second half of "Wicked" hits movie screens.

I saw "Jesus Christ Superstar" on stage at the American Theater in downtown St. Louis in 1975. (Lovely Catherine, where are you?) Is it still there, and if so, what is its name, since everything now is sponsored?

I'm sure the stunt casting will have its intended effect: the outrage of all the dumbest people on the planet will create maxed out publicity and ticket sales.

As for Erivo herself, she has the look and demeanor of a cult leader, and some of the press I've seen with her and Ariana Grande seems to indicate that Grande might have drunk her kool-aid. They both look extremely unhealthy walking carpets together, both physically and psychologically.

Say what you want about how Ms. Erivo looks or how she chooses to live her life (she's unique and not hurting anyone, so who cares).....but she can definitely sing. Pretty powerful performance to open the Oscars.
