Why did it take over two months to finalize the Ozzie Smith-Garry Templeton trade, and why was Ozzie so determined to make the Padres pay on the way out?

Re: This Date in Cardinals History
Great trade for the Cardinals. TLR, like any good leader, tries to surround himself with guys he knows and trusts can get the job done. Eck was certainly one of those guys. Honeycutt was another, one of the most reliable set-up men in baseball. Unfortunately, I think that spoiled TLR and for a long time. Pitchers like Honeycutt are extremely rare, and TLRs paint-by-numbers bullpen scheme was always the weakest aspect of an otherwise greaet managerial style. He expected to be able to find a set-up man with Honeycutt's consistency and never really found one, often pounding guys out to the mound only to fail more often than they should have. Oh well, praise to Dennis Eckersley.remembirds wrote: ↑13 Feb 2025 08:18 am On this date in 1996, the Cardinals traded for Dennis Eckersley, reuniting the future Hall of Famer with manager Tony La Russa. Ahead of the 1922 season, the Cardinals’ uniforms underwent a major change, replacing the “ST. LOUIS” lettering with the iconic birds on the bat. Here’s how the logo was born in Ferguson, Mo.
