SNL Catch-Phrases That Are in Our Daily Lives

Post by Pink Freud »

If the secret to success in advertising is repeat-repeat-repeat, then I guess making a SNL catchphrase ubiquitous is to use it often, or on every best-of clips show: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/202 ... =url-share

IMO Dana Carvey is the best SNL cast member ever. I know, maybe a bit contraversial, but man he created so many memorable and long-lasting characters. Dude could do it all. Phil Hartman is probably my #2, or maybe even 1b to Carvey's 1a.
Chris Rock plays the host — “so Black they counted him four times at the Million Man March” — of “The Dark Side With Nat X.” It’s the only 15-minute show on the air, and do you know who decided that’s all the time he gets? You guessed it.
That is hilarious. I had forgotten about Nat X.

I loved Phil Hartman. His impersonation of Reagan as a bumbling fool in public then the multitasking genius behind closed doors was brilliant. As was The Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer. "I'm just a caveman. Your world frightens and confuses me."

I've always enjoyed their parody commercials, starting with the Bass-o-Matic on year 2. Here's 2 that get me laughing out loud

A few media people here have noted the first ten minutes of the current Peacock special "Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music" is among the best TV they've ever seen.

Who’s going to be at the 50th-anniversary special?
Of the current and former cast members: Adam Sandler, Amy Poehler, Andy Samberg, Chevy Chase, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Fred Armisen, Garrett Morris, Jane Curtin, Jason Sudeikis, Jimmy Fallon, Kate McKinnon, Kenan Thompson, Kristen Wiig, Laraine Newman, Maya Rudolph, Martin Short, Molly Shannon, Pete Davidson, Seth Meyers, Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan, Will Ferrell, and Will Forte. But since NBC is still promising more guests, maybe they’re saving Rachel Dratch so America doesn’t get too excited and climb light poles like a country of Philadelphians.

There’s also a bunch of non–cast members who will be there to take part in the fun. Those names include Adam Driver, Ayo Edebiri, Bad Bunny, Dave Chappelle, John Mulaney, Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Pedro Pascal, Peyton Manning, Quinta Brunson, Robert De Niro, Sabrina Carpenter, Scarlett Johansson, Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, and Woody Harrelson. And, yes, Steve Martin was never officially a cast member of Saturday Night Live. Look it up.

Chopping Broccoli was one we repeated a lot. (Now that I think about it, maybe this wasn’t from snl, but one of Carvey’s standup bits)

Of course, Live in a Van Down by the River

(Maybe) a little more obscure, but my cousin and I were on “you lika da peppa?” kick for awhile.

My wife and I do the “Chopping Broccoli” pretty regularly. I’m positive it was SNL. Maybe he also did it in his standup, but I’ve never seen any of his act, so it was for sure SNL for me.
