Tomorrow will mark 57 years since Cardinals slugger Joe Medwick was elected to the Hall of Fame in his final year of eligibility. “The waiting was worse than waiting for the birth of my son,” he said.

When the Cardinals traded for John Stuper on this date in 1979, it didn’t make either the St. Louis or Pittsburgh papers. Four seasons later, the Cardinals called upon Stuper to keep their season alive in Game 6 of the 1982 World Series …

Nice! And that was after acquiring John Tudor earlier. Now that's an off season.

On this date in 1989, former Cardinals first baseman Bill White was named National League president. Though headlines noted that he was the first black man to serve as league president, White preferred to focus on being the first former player to hold the post in over 70 years.

In eight seasons with the Cardinals from 1921 through 1928, George “Specs” Toporcer was an elite pinch hitter who happened to back up two Hall of Fame second basemen in Rogers Hornsby and Frankie Frisch. He also became the first major league infielder to wear glasses in a game. Here’s his story:
