I heard today that The Brutalist used AI to create or enhance the voice accent of Brody. I think a line needs to be drawn. CGI is one thing, for special effects, enhancing actor's performances is another.

Heretic...there's torture porn and then there's whatever that was. It's like if, instead of a chainsaw, Leatherface had a Youtube channel. When he brought up simulation theory, I wanted to hang myself on a meat hook.

The acting was great. Especially Chloe East as the goody-goody.

Since I absolutely loved the Coens' "Inside Llewyn Davis" (2013) with the amazing Oscar Isaac doing his own singing, you'd think I'd look forward to "A Complete Unknown"...except I simply can't stand Bob Dylan's singing; for me it's nails on a blackboard with a leaf blower going.

Wasn't it SNL's "Weekend Update" who stated that Timothee Chalamet's singing is so dead-on like Dylan that even Dylan himself said he sounded awful?

I can't believe how few Oscar nominees I've seen, since many of them haven't opened in theaters near here, so I hope they're brought back for a theatrical victory lap during awards season.

I did see and thoroughly enjoy "Conclave" and "Wicked", and hope to see "The Brutalist", then see if I can get through "Emilia Perez"....that is, if the hardcore "patriots" in this region don't burn down any theater showing it.

Such a riveting film. Went in not knowing much about the film other than it had to be made in secret so I was unprepared for the story it was about to present. The inclusion of the real cell phone recordings was a powerful touch. Definitely recommend this one.

Read that the director was sentenced to 8 years in prison after the release of this film and had to eventually flee Iran.

This wave of Iranian filmmakers--Farhadi, Panahi, Rasolouf--are fearless.

The movie itself had greatness in its sights, IMO, but the turn toward women-in-peril thriller in the last third was unwise. At the very least, there was a bit more nuts-and-bolts story work that needed to be done, if that's the way it was headed. For instance...

There was no suggestion before the end that the father was a physical threat. When he was chasing them at the end, I kept thinking, what exactly happens if he catches them? More intense bickering? The movie needed to establish that he was capable of real violence, if it wanted him to become a life and death menace.

Also, what was the daughter's motivation to steal the gun in the first place?

That said, this is clearly not the kind of movie where you can reshoot based on audience reaction in test screenings, so maybe a grading curve is warranted. So maybe B+?
