The Braves needed a LF and feel they got a durable switch-hitting bat with on-base and contact skills in Profar. They don't think his last year was a fluke and they backed their judgement with a nice contract.

Buyer Beware
Something fishy about Profar putting up these numbers going into his age 32 season.
Bad signing IMO.
A couple things
A) His last 2 full seasons at SD
2022 3.0 bWAR/2.4 fWAR
2024 3.6 bWAR/4.3 fWAR
SD seems to be the place he’s most comfortable at.
B) He apparently completely reworked his batting stance. He added a leg kick, opened his stance, and his EV went from 86.5 mph in 2023 to 91.1 mph this year.
“ #Braves Alex Anthopoulos said they believe in the swing changes Jurickson Profar made in a career-best 2024. They see that production as sustainable and what he did last year is who he'll be moving forward”

I remember when he came up in 2012 at the age of 19 -- the top prospect at that time in baseball. Hit a homer in his first at bat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwU_4KsK2YU
A much ballyhooed switch hitting shortstop who could hit, he got injured and missed the entire 2014 and 2015 seasons. Became a run-of-the mill player for the next eight seasons hitting .239/.324/.388/.712. Last year, he demonstrated his long delayed talents, but alas at the age of 30.
Now strictly an outfielder, he might still be able to play second and third in a pinch. Not sure about SS. If he's truely found himself, he can be a Gene Woodling type -- a valuable cog for any playoff contending team.
He and Taveras were supposed to be the face of baseball.
I remember some on here saying we should've traded Oscar for Jurickson. At the time, we had a glut of OF talent with Grichuk and Piscotty and one or two I'm forgetting. And we had nothing coming on the infield, but Texas had nothing coming in the OF.

2022/2023 average season SD/Colo:
590 PA
12 HR
3 SB
.243 .327 .381 .708
96 OPS+
Then he DOUBLES his HR's to 24 in 2024, triples his SB's while adding .131 pts to his OPS/38 pts to his OPS+
Reeks of PED's to me.
Yes, he sucked in Colorado (77 OPS+).
When with Padres:
2022: 109 OPS+
2023: 115 OPS+ (14 games)
2024: 134 OPS+
He’s been with the Padres for at least partial time over the last 5 years. In 4 of those, his OPS+ has been at least 109. He’s comfortable there. Maybe he’ll fit in well in Atlanta since it’s a good team, but his history shows outside of San Diego he’s mostly been bad.

Profar was super highly touted . He never seemed to quite put it together. Maybe he finally clicked. The talent was there. May be a huge good signing.

I know I'm jaded from the steroid era but when I see a guy like Profar have such an outlier, in his walk year, I can't help but think somethings fishy.

I think you are just a bit. I just don’t think it’s that crazy of an outlier. His batting average certainly was better, which was helped by a career best .302 BABIP, but that’s pretty much the biggest outlier and biggest reason for his increase in SLG% and OBP.
BABIP
2024: .302
Career: .271
Walk rate
2024: 11.4%
Career: 10%
ISO: .179
Career: .150
***note, he had a better ISO with Texas (.204) and Oakland (.192) in 2018-19.
HR/FB: 13.6%
Career: 10.2%
Singles: 105
Previous career best: 87
Maybe the swing changes (which were talked about early in 2024) just helped him hit for better contact.
I've heard you sing that song before. Player has a good year, he's juicing. Bad year, he got off the juice. Something reeks alright.
The Braves aren't infallible but for now I'll trust their take on Profar.
Just a bit of an exaggeration there jcg but I get your point.
Don't blame me for raising an eyebrow when I see a player like Profar, blame the steroid era players who brought this kind of scrutiny upon themselves.
Do your own research on Profar, look at what he did in 2022 & 2023...........then exploded (coincidence?) in his free agent walk season.
Fool us once shame on them, fool us multiple times...........well you know how it ends.
