RIP Peter Yarrow

Post by edwin drood »

Of Peter, Paul and Mary, the quintessential folk trio of the 60's and 70's. Known for their renditions of "If I Had a Hammer", Dylan's "Blowin in the Wind", and a Yarrow song "Puff the Magic Dragon". Bandmate Mary Travers died in 2009 of leukemia. Yarrow was 86 when he passed today.

My introduction to folk music when I was just 7 or 8 years old was my older sister's records which included the debut LP by Peter, Paul, and Mary. Along with Dylan and Joan Baez, this music was quite captivating to my young ears. Sometimes I did not fully understand some of the songs, but did as I got older.

One song that touched me more than any other by Peter Yarrow was released in 1967 on the Album 1700:

The Great Mandella

Here's Yarrow with a detailed take on the folk movement, progressivism, folk festivals in general, 65 Newport Folk Festival (the climax of the recent Dylan film). He was sort of in the middle, saw the big picture. RIP, Pete :

Read about his "history" here. It's not pleasant.
