Gladiator II - Dumb

Post by 3dender »

Just saw this yesterday and it was worse than I expected. Mescal is weirdly forgettable as a lead, all the characters are super-thin, the plot/editing are abrupt, and the script is super-lazy. It also felt just way too long for what it is. They're clearly trying to capture the poignance and epicness of the original, but without characters you care about brought to life by charismatic actors, there's just nothing to latch onto.

Denzel is interesting but more distracting than good... a lot of positive critics seem to not understand that over-acting does not equal great acting.

Anyway, if you pay to see this while not getting dragged to it by a friend (as I did), then you deserve what you get.
Spoiler
And it's just baffling how they keep referring to Lucius as "Maximus's son"... like he met him twice? And he just goes around telling people he's the son of Maximus... I understand like in a spiritual or symbolic sense or whatever, but I kept imagining the people he's saying this to just looking quizzically, "Wait really? Maximus (bleep) Lucilla? When did that happen?"

Saw a news item about a Wicked and Gladiator. Showed a fighter riding on the back of a rhino. Did Ray Harryhausen get a credit?

The rhino fight was probably the coolest and most memorable, although CGI animals (even pretty good CGI, which this was) don't really do it for me anymore.

This isn't CGI...

I thought it was ok for a distraction, not awesome though. The cinematography and acting were pretty good.

I would agree, too long. Movies these days, I don’t understand why they have to be like 2 1/2 or 3 hours.

For this, at least I can say I could follow who all the characters were. Unlike a lot of these historical type films. Some of the plot points were a little silly …. Spoiler maybe:
Spoiler
Like Gladiator dude just giving the ring to the doctor to deliver to the army. That’s enough for them to march the whole army to Rome? And then Denzel, knowing what’s gonna happen, just rides his horse all the way out to the front lines. And, there’s no big army battle. Just old Denzel fighting a ripped Gladiator dude who’s like 40 years younger than he was … who dispatched him in a couple of seconds. The Tyson/Paul fight was better than that.

That was kind of a “who gives a [shirt]” ending in my opinion.
And while the animal CGI wasn’t awful, I also don’t think it was very good. The rhino and the sharks look super fake to me. The rhino in Ace Ventura 2 looked more realistic.

Oh, and
Spoiler
The Emperor cut-off-head scene. That looked extremely fake, & how much screen time they gave that was ridiculous. My buddy said — when they do a scene like that, they have to have it up for like a few frames. Denzel spinning that absurd head around to everyone was downright hilarious.
