I've always been an Ovechkin fan. More so because I couldn't stand Crosby.
Here's my take. Ovechkin may score 894 in less games than Gretzky. Wayne played on teams surrounded by HOF'ers which obviously would give him more assists. The goalie in the Gretzky era, woof. Talent has risen, bigger goalies and much bigger pads. Of course it's going to take more shots to score in smaller areas. Ovechkin plays a physical game. Many thought he wouldn't last because of the physicality he exerts.
Not taking anything away from the Great One, but I'd have to give the GOAT status to #GR8.
GOAT? I mean, GOAT goal scorer maybe but best player of all time? No way. The era excuse doesn't fly for me because why did no one else from those eras even come close to 99?
I'm sorry but if you have more assists than the second place guy has points (and also btw scored the most goals), you are the unquestioned GOAT. That is dominance possibly not rivaled in any other major sport.
im not sure that is true. lemeiux had more pts per game, or did at one point. not saying hes not the greatest, but its not like he was per game better than mario.
to me, i just dont always think you can say who the best is of all time. JMO.

66 is the only player that even makes it somewhat of a debate, I'll give you that. But I am not sure where you are getting your numbers. According to the NHL, Gretz PPG is 1.92 and Lemieux is 1.88.
But when we are talking GOAT, part of that is longevity too. Whether or not it was Mario's fault, his health prevented him from playing a ton of games. That goes into whether or not you are a GOAT to me at least. Some of it is luck yes, but sustaining GOAT play for as long as 99 did is part of the reason I feel he is the undisputed GOAT.
hey Maimi, this is why i said at one point lol, mario tailed off at the end of his career bc he was playing in the dead puck era. compare pre 95, Mario had more per game.
not trying to start a fight lol, u bring up good points.
im just not sure its fair to compare eras. connor at 1.52 and gretz at 1.92... im leaning connor there. buttttttt again, connor had advantages gretz didnt, diet excerise . its tough to compare what gretz wouldve been with all that.
lol and i cant get the math to work, but trust me as a wee little boy at some point in time , mario did have a slightly higher pts per game. at any rates its really immaterial.

No worries. Not at all arguing. I was actually worried that maybe I was missing something with Mario's PPG numbers.
Yes, tough to compare eras. I wish it were possible to plunk McD or Ovie down into Gretzky's era and see what they do.
The GOAT discussion (goalies excluded) currently involves three guys: Howe, Orr, and Gretzky. It is hard to compare eras. Howe played forever and Orr's career was cut short by injury. However a lot of his contemporaries treat Bobby Orr with a near reverence.
I don't know that Ovi fits in that same discussion. If Brett Hull had played as many games as Ovi and not played in the dead puck era, his goal totals might be pretty close to GR8. Had Mario been healthy, had Richard played in the modern era...............................
Wayne Gretzky was the most dominant GOAT of any sport in N.America. Y'all are questioning if Ovi is the GOAT because he reached 1 record? Gretzky has like 50 more NHL records to his name. Most of his records will never be broken. No athlete in any sport has dominated their sport like Gretzky.

Any major sport, sure. Might be an argument for Tom Brady but I still say Gretzky.

The guy seems inspired.. And others seem to be giving him room.
lol , that has to be the dumbest thing i have ever heard.
yeah they have been giving him space since 2005. they have given him space 870 times, odd they dont learn.
they give mcdavid space. they give matthews space. they give gretz space.
or maybe those guys make space and you just cant defend them?
That's what I say. People say Ovi is a one-dimensional player and can only score from one spot. Then defend that. Yet they can't stop him.
The king of the empty netters. Everyone else does all the work. He couldn't kill a penalty if his buddy Putin's life depended on it. Mr. One Way and the last time his name was mentioned with the work check was when he wrote one.

You can’t compare eras. Ovie probably has 1200+ goals if he played in Gretzky’s era. Gretzky probably only gets 60-70% of his career points if he played in the 2000’s and later.
It’s not crazy to say that. Babe Ruth wouldn’t touch today’s pitchers with his swing.
Doesn’t take anything away from WG, he’s the goat, but a lot of it has to do with him being that much better than guys in the 80s.
