Heretic

Post by todd-parker »

Pretty engrossing thriller/horror about two young, female members of the LDS church who have an encounter during a home missionary visit. I can't recall seeing Hugh Grant in a movie like this before (it's more thriller than straight-up horror) but he does not disappoint. Hard to say much more without venturing into spoiler territory. I went in blind (only having seen the trailer) and so should you, but the unpredictable story definitely kept my attention.

If you can overlook the fact that the writer/director duo on this film also wrote/directed the forgettable Adam Driver film, '65', you should be set for a good time. This one is recommended.

I will see "Heretic" this week, and knowing only what I saw in the trailer I was reminded just a bit of Michael Parks's character in Kevin Smith's disturbing thriller "Red State".

A cool film concept would be a bunch of vulnerable people getting dragooned by a pseudo-scientist into being strapped onto election gadgets & coerced into confessing their past lifetimes' sins & bracing adventures, moreover getting them to fork over big money for the privilege.

They could call it Scientology. :)

IRL, it would be interesting to have a doc covering the strangest experiences encountered by many generations of young Mormon men, scurrying about the first world, knocking on strange doors, encountering all manner of strange people. Has to be thousands of amazing stories. Getting them to talk would be the trick.
