Disney confirms the return of Robert Downey, Jr. to the MCU...

Post by Targaryen »

...but he's not going to be playing Tony Stark, who I assume is still very much dead.

RDJ has been cast as Victor von Doom, AKA Doctor Doom, who I assume will be the new main villain for the Multiverse Saga since the firing of Jonathan Majors (Kang). The next Avengers movie, scheduled for release in May 2026 has been given the official title Avengers: Doomsday (it was originally titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty). Joe and Anthony Russo are also returning to direct the film. The sixth Avengers movie is still titled Avengers: Secret Wars, and is scheduled for release in May 2027.

That's certainly a move.

In a way, this is kind of a hack-ish move, but hopefully it will be done right. The Russo Brothers being involved gives me hope.

I know there have been storylines in the comics where Tony Stark was Dr. Doom. So I wonder, is this a variant of Doom or the main Doom in the universe?

Considering there is no reason to show Doom's face, they could (and should) keep the characters separate.

But...I think there is just no possibility they are able to resist the temptation to tie them together.

Didn't he die in Endgame? :P

Seriously, don't love this move at all, and I agree, it does kind of reek of desperation. In the Russo Brothers we trust but this was definitely a bold move.

Stunt casting aside, the deep irony is that if Doom's done right you should almost never even see who the actor is behind the mask. So this announcement is an inherent proclamation that they are planning to mess up the classic character.

Stark died in Endgame, but there would be a million comic book ways to bring back a version of him (clones, alternative universes, etc.)
