RIP Jerry Miller

Post by 12xu »

The former lead guitarist for 60's San Francisco band Moby Grape has passed away at 81 years of age. Miller was admired and respected by many more well known guitarists such as Jimmy Page, Jerry Garcia, and Eric Clapton - who once called him "the best guitar player in the world". If one listens to Moby Grape's debut album, released in 1967, it is easy to understand why he was held in such high esteem by his peers.

It's amazing how many great guitarists came out of that San Francisco psychedelic movement: Jerry Garcia, Carlos Santana, Jorma Kaukonen, John Cippolina, Steve Miller, Barry "The Fishh' Melton (Country Joe and), David Laflamme (violin with it's A Beautiful Day). Great music, indeed.

Loads of talent for certain, and don't forget Gary Duncan of Quicksilver, who paired with Cippolina to create an early twin lead guitarist style.

I'd add Weir, Lesh and Jack Cassidy. Then maybe Buddy Cage (originally from Canada but became famous w NRPS) on pedal steel.

Always liked Moby Grape and thought that they deserved better. Especially 805
