Michael McDonald's Bio "What a Fool Believes", with Paul Reiser.

Post by Pink Freud »

After leaving St. Louis for L.A., providing backup vocals for Elton John, Steely Dan, Bonnie Raitt, Toto, et al, then a dynamite career as the Doobie Bros.' on-and-off frontman and 9 solo albums, he's ready to tell us all about it, penned by his comedian buddy Paul Reiser (himself an accomplished pianist).

Some fun passages:

Donald Fagen: "There was a serious discussuion about whether he should replace me as lead singer (of Steely Dan), which would have been my preference."

After getting his girlfriend pregnant in the 8th grade, "Disappearing became my M.O. Distancing myself from whatever it was that required accountability.

McDonald as a teen joined St. Louis bands called the Sheratons; Delrays; The Guild and The Blue.

Seriously, would Christopher Cross had gotten any radio airplay without McDonald's smoky "...such a long way to go..." on "Ride Like the Wind"?

Comedians jumped on McDonald's tiring ubiquity in the early 80s, from SCTV to "South Park" to "30 Rock" to "The 40-Year-old Virgin".

Michael and singer Amy Holland have been married for 41 years, wed to the Ambrosia lead singer warbling "Biggest Part of Me".

Co-author Reiser also wrote " Couplehood" and "Babyhood".

Words to remember, re drugs and booze: "I remember looking to the guys who seem to manage it well --- who did a little of this, a little of that but didn't have a problem like I suspected I did --- ....and every one of those guys, to a man, is gone."
