Whitey Herzog wasn’t certain exactly what caliber of pitcher he was receiving when he traded for Joaquin Andujar in 1981, but he did know one thing – the Cardinals were getting a personality unlike any they’d ever seen.

On the day of Whitey Herzog’s first game as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, he found himself, somewhat baffled, in Marietta, Georgia, trying to get to the team hotel in nearby Atlanta.

With just two hits in his previous 38 at-bats, Mike Gonzalez was an unlikely hero when he stepped to the plate in the 15th inning of the Cardinals’ June 11, 1917, game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

It took a lot to make Stan Musial visibly angry. But when the legendary Cardinals outfielder learned that the Cardinals had traded Red Schoendienst, Musial made his displeasure clear.

Many of us thought who is this guy Brock. Well, it didn't take long once he was given the green light on the bases to find out what an exciting player he was and a quiet leader also. He turned a dull team into a very exciting team because other players started taking more chances on the baseball and as Harry once said "it was the return of Gashouse Gang Baseball"!

Yup, this used to be the trade deadline and, remember, the season didn't used to start in March, but mid-April. So teams would often make early season trades to shake things up if they saw their seasons going sideways.

For example, the Cardinals acquired Tom Brunansky on April 22 and George Hendrick on May 26. Now it seems teams are willing to wait for the much later end of July deadline, when it is often too late to make a real difference. Or, they are content to compete for WC 3.

As the article indicates, Boyer hit for a natural cycle - single, double, triple, homer, in that order. A very rare occurrence that has happened only 14 times in MLB history.
