Re: Brandon Carlo for 2 Third rounders
Holy Cow this is a great trade for us, a 29yo defensive defenseman (the guys has NEVER had a negative +/- season in his entire NHL career) big and fairly mobile who only cost's $4 million for two 3rd round picks.?.?
What is Toronto thinking?

Good move for one season. Jiricek will be taking over soon, probably by next spring. Good bridge option. Don't re-sign this guy though.

Re: Brandon Carlo for 2 Third rounders
Carlo is only 29 (someone whining that he's 30+ earlier).
He's +144 for his career. +144. He's never been a negative player. Ever.
This is an awesome move. For two thirds? Plugs a huge hole on the defense. We look solid as heck now on D for next year.
Broberg Maillioux
Lindstein Parayko
Fowler Carlo
Tucker
Jiricek and all the LHDs down in the A.
If Carlo proves to be a good fit you can keep him and try and move Parayko later.
Armstrong and Steen have their ish together this year.
Oh and we just scooped another big RHD Luke Shairer.

More likely Carlo is Lindstein's mentor on the 3rd pairing so Fowler can get back into the top 4.STL fan in MN wrote: ↑27 Jun 2026 11:41 amNot necessarily. Had bad advanced stats last year, so no wonder Chayka wants him gone. Interesting we have now traded for two “hockey players” who don’t have great advanced stats. We are definitely still more old school in our scouting.
One thing about some of those advanced stats is they’re often very situational. Put a guy that should be a 3rd pairing guy on your 2nd pairing and the team as a whole is really bad (like Toronto was this past season) and it should be no surprise his metrics look poor. But Carlo’s been in the league 10-11 years so he’s a pretty known commodity.
We know he’s not amazing but his job will be to hold down the fort and provide some stability to the 3rd pairing. Heck of a better parter for Fowler than Holl. Or Kessel or Tucker.
Don't know if I want Fowler with Colt or Mailloux but either works as a 2nd pairing.
Now we just need to clean up the logjam up front.

Re: Brandon Carlo for 2 Third rounders
The Blues clearly want to be competitive. And even teams that are well aware they’re not going to win the Cup in a particular season still need to fill out their roster and ice a solid team. We had a huge hole on the right side of our defense. Carlo won’t be a part of what we’re building towards in 2-3 years but he can help hold down the fort as guys like Mailloux and Lindstein gain experience and Jiricek eventually breaks into the league.TBone wrote: ↑27 Jun 2026 11:41 amI don't understand treating the hard earned 3rd rounders like PEZ candy either, but apparently Blues management thinks they can win this year.Cardsfanforlife wrote: ↑27 Jun 2026 11:32 amIts a good trade I said... Is 2 3rd sort of expensive if he only spends 1 season with us? Yeah, maybe. But maybe Jiricek makes him expendable by March and we can trade him at the trade deadline and more or less recoup that same approx value. Then it’d be a push in terms of assets AND we’d get Carlo stabilizing our 3rd pairing for most of the season. Or maybe he solidifies the 3rd pairing well enough that we re-sign him for another 1-2 years and he continues to serve as a #5-7 guy for a couple more years. A lot yet to be determined.

Re: Brandon Carlo for 2 Third rounders
They are definitely a win now team. The would not have acquired McTavish if the were only looking to the future. This forces Jiricek to earn a call up. If Jiricek is playing on the Blues at the end of the year, Carlo can be the 7th man.stlblues1979 wrote: ↑27 Jun 2026 11:31 amExactly this!tfriede2 wrote: ↑27 Jun 2026 11:26 amWhy are we acting like this is an all-in move? Try telling Mr. Stillman, "but we are not a win now team."

For everyone complaining that they traded away 4 picks, they still have 9 picks in this draft. They can’t all fit into your lineup and McTavish and Carlo will fill a need while the younger prospects develop. They are already kind of crowded at forward right now, and may trade off a couple guys for 27’ picks.

Re: Brandon Carlo for 2 Third rounders
They put too much trust in Tucker (and Kessel). The team will be exposed in this way for the next few seasons, at least. A lot of young players in the pipeline with more to come.
It's not all downside risk, the young players will ring upside, too.

Re: Brandon Carlo for 2 Third rounders
When you say "Blues management thinks they can win this year." what do you think the definition of "win" is, to management? The Cup? Conference Finals? I believe they can win this year, and my definition is "Make the playoffs and make some noise" like 2 years ago. Last season showed us what happens when you don't fill the holes on the roster. We have too much talent for a top 5 pick barring catastrophic injuries. If they want to give time to Jirichek to grow, getting a RHD who can play NHL quality defense is a good idea. None of us want to be in the same boat next year.TBone wrote: ↑27 Jun 2026 11:41 amI don't understand treating the hard earned 3rd rounders like PEZ candy either, but apparently Blues management thinks they can win this year.Cardsfanforlife wrote: ↑27 Jun 2026 11:32 amIts a good trade I said... Re: Brandon Carlo for 2 Third rounders
Yeah, maybe. I tend to not get too caught up on the pairings teams write down on paper to start games as that’s not how it always works in games. Like Fowler was listed on the 3rd pairing with Holl the last couple months of the season but he’d then still get plenty of time with Parayko and end up with top-4 minutes most of the time.kimzey59 wrote: ↑27 Jun 2026 11:46 amMore likely Carlo is Lindstein's mentor on the 3rd pairing so Fowler can get back into the top 4.STL fan in MN wrote: ↑27 Jun 2026 11:41 amNot necessarily. He’s a pretty respectable defensive defenseman who fills the very big hole we had at the 3rd RHD slot.
Hard to argue.

Re: Brandon Carlo for 2 Third rounders
Right, did people forget how scary our defensive pairs were last season? We had/have WAY too many young dmen without enough steady established NHL ones to balance them out. With Fowler showing he was anything but consistent/steady, this was a major need for this Blues team.Frank Underwood wrote: ↑27 Jun 2026 11:20 am I can honestly tell who posted certain comments without even looking at the name. We could acquire McDavid for a 3rd rounder and a few of you would hate it!
Now I fell much better about having LM somewhere in our 6 dmen and there is no question the Blues want to give Lindstein a chance to really establish himself this season.
The Blues missed Suter a lot last season.

Yea, I was a big fan of Lefty McNoName too. Miss that guy. Perfect third pairing guy, glad he got over that potentially fatal flaw of not really existing.Cahokanut wrote: ↑27 Jun 2026 11:27 am2forDiving wrote: ↑27 Jun 2026 11:24 amPlease advise all of us which RHD is being over seasoned in Springfield?
Only recently is a right hand shot needed to play on the right and your right others have moved on after not getting a opportunity.
No reason to have a fit. Just say you love it and tells us all how great a gm he is.

What if it is more of a mandate for the team to return to the playoffs after
the drought and allow for the offensive youth to carry the team wherever they go?
