Herrera makes 2026 debut at catcher on Sunday

Been working dilligently on backfields working on his throwing. DeScalso reports that his throws have good zip on them and he liked that throws down to 2nd base are missing on the 1st base side (the ideal location instead of on the 3rd base side ).
His in-game work behind the plate will be scrutinized closely by all. Hoping CT watching the game will give the forum their critique on how he looks on Sunday .

Ha! You are hoping for a critical assessment? You’ll get that even before the game. I’m sure you’ll get a boat load of thoughts.

Not watching from perspective of him being fine but rather the sharper he looks throwing, handling the pitchers etc. that will impact Pages, Pozo, and Crooks spots for the team.
Not enough spots for all of them.

If they determine Herrera is better suited for DH , then one more catcher makes the final team.

Good one ! Lol. I thought of that as well. Evaluating the injured player BEFORE he plays his first game after rehab… it’s referred to by some …. CT ‘s New Cardinal Way.

Okay I get it

IF for some unforeseen reason Hererra is able to actually throw out runners, call a good game and stay healthy, then he's an all-star caliber catcher.

BUT

We already know from past experience he can't throw out runners (I'm not buying the clean-up suddenly makes him league average nabbing base runners), he can't stay healthy (big time injury risk behind the plate) AND the Cardinals have not one (Bernal) but two (R.R.) outstanding catchers roaring towards St. Louis!

I wish they'd chuck this by the second week of March, give him a 1st baseman's mitt and start teaching him how to play there so he can takeover if/when they deal Burly mid-or-offseason.

If he's an occasional backup or spot starter I guess it's no big deal, but you can't expect an oft-injured young guy to be your MOTO bat if he's behind the plate more than once a week. Hopefully, his inability to stop runners continues and ends this horrid experiment.

Exactly. I am of the opinion that the Cardinals have 3 better options at C today than Herrera, and two more in the future. Nothing wrong with experimenting. It will be interesting to see how he does. I wish him well.

You guys are failing to see the obvious plan. We are going to have 5 catchers each with their own starting pitcher. They are teaching them all to play left field and first base. There will be a regular rotation for all positions. Walker likely goes yo aaa to learn to catch as well.

That's funny!

I don't understand why St Louis like the revolving DH. Many American league teams have regular DH. Herrera would be great there

But what would we do with the rest of our guys who either can't run, play defense, or both?

Terrible post, Black.

Oft-injured is a bit of a premature label.
Herrera is more than capable of catching more than once a week and still be a good hitter.
