The question then becomes - something I raised before - why did we have him at shortstop all last season when the only position on the infield where he was guaranteed not to play was shortstop? 2 errors in 3 games at 2B would indicate he should have been at 2B or 3B - anywhere but SS.

Throwing or fielding? Also to get an error, especially ST must have been a badly played ball. Twice.

Just need to let this breathe a little bit. If you’re playing SS, you can play anywhere on the field. He gets to the ball up the middle which shows good reaction and athleticism, just didn’t come up with it cleanly, it was ruled a hit. Trying to do too much with the throw is where the error occurred and that’s a where a young player learns and grows. Keep playing boys. Clip of the play below.

Kind of both yesterday. He booted a grounder hit towards him then tried to recover but threw way off line to 1B. I didn’t see the other game.

He did play 2nd and 3rd (as well as SS) last year in the minors.

The error yesterday was on a backhand play that he knocked down then rushed the throw to try and get thr runner. Burleson also did a poor job of keeping it in front of him. Not a big deal at all.

JJ will be just fine at 2nd. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to see him win a GG there. Relax, guy.

Thanx. Does the throw to first indicate maybe rookie reaction. Or a real chance at an out.

I understand the play was a back hand play, so he’d be going away from first.

Goldy picks that throw at 1st. Might not of stayed on the bag but I believe he would have got it.

A. Pro scouts rating him in college never raved about any fielding prowess for JJ and B

B JJ in his own words stated ‘I have always been a ‘hit first’ type player so by his own words he doesn’t see his fielding as anything exceptional. Not saying he isn’t average but others including himself do not evaluate his fielding anything special.

Probably should’ve held on to it. Took him a few seconds to gather the ball. It was a backhanded play, away from 1B, as you stated. Hard to say because I’m not familiar with his arm strength. It’s probably a throw that Masyn Winn makes, but would’ve been very hard, or impossible, for most.

From the video I've seen and personal experience he's going to be an above average defensive 2nd baseman.

Those infields in Florida can be tricky and let's not get too overly excited if he boots a ball or rushes a throw.

He's human and nerves for a kid about to make his major league debut in a few weeks is understandable.

He's going to be inked in at 2nd base, IMO he's be just fine.

I haven’t seen him enough to say, but it would be a worthy experiment if Sagesse/Fermin/whoever are playing 2B and looking flashier…assuming they’re holding their own with the bat.

We know the alternative at 3B. I’m pulling for Gorman but he hasn’t given me much reason to believe. His defense was atrocious at 3B, which was surprising because he didn’t embarrass himself at 2B. Offensively, he strikes out so much that he just looks overmatched. JJ looks the opposite and why I’m kind of buying the hype on him.

Yea. My wild fantasy is to have JJ at third and resemble George Brett. As you noted- second Cant be manned by several other EMERGING if allowed infielders, as you mentioned.

Winn and JJ on the left side. Formidable I’d think.

Good to hear. I didn’t make too much over the misplay because I haven’t seen him much.

I am intrigued by his ability to play 3B because it seems there is more depth at 2B. Cardinals said Sagesse is going to get a real shot this year, and I think Fermin has earned a shot. I’d rather see them at 2B and JJW at 3rd than the retread vet they brought in to play 3rd (forgot his name) if Gorman fails again because it does nothing for the future.

I just zipped through the mlbtv archived game and watched only ABs, not defense or pitching yesterday. So I didn't see the error. I would not worry too much about the first couple of ST games. What did impress me about JJW's at bats was his knowledge of the strike zone. Looks like a confident hitter who will command the zone. A lot of vets don't swing much early in ST as they are honing their eye. Nice to see a rookie who knows the zone and won't chase. Baez hit that one ball pretty well. It is really early. As for ultimate defensive position for JJW, well, if Gorman fails (unfortunately highly likely), then it would help the team if he can play 3B so that Saggese can play 2B. Saggese doesn't have the arm for the left side of the IF. At least not from what I saw last season. Fermin is in the mix as well if Oli will actually give him a chance.

HOLY sheet folks! He stopped a hot shot on his backhand from going into CF. No error there. He then should've just held the ball but instead hurriedly tried to make the throw to first. The throw was in the dirt and that was the error. As some mentioned many first basemen would have at least fielded the ball away from the bag.

Nothing to get excited about, IMO. What was exciting was his patience at the plate which resulted in two walks and a run scored. Most rookies in their first spring training would have tried to hit those pitches just out of the zone. JJ will be an outstanding top of the order batter, and his defense at 2B will be better than Gorman and at least as good as Donovan was.
