The Winner of the First "Mo Award" is...

Post by Talkin' Baseball »

The Mo Award is for the POBO/GM whose team is on the cusp of accomplishment, but squanders their opportunity through direct inactivity and risk-aversion. The winner of the Mo Award finds their team less relevant at the start of this season than they did at the close of last season as a direct result of the front office.

The winner of this seasons' Mo Award is Dave Dombrowski of the Philadelphia Phillies. He started his offseason by pizzing off his superstar hitter and team leader, questioning whether he was still elite, or not. The Phillies won their division and needed a boost to make the next step. They have an aging roster and a limited window. While they did re-sign two key players, they lost Ranger Suarez and Harrison Bader. They also thought they had Bo Bichette, but their rivals stole him away. Their pitching staff needed big upgrades and received none. The Phillies basically still have every weakness they had at the trade deadline last year. They have a mess in the OF that was addressed by bringing in Adolis Garcia who was non-tendered by the Rangers. They've talked for 2 years now about dumping Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos, but still have them both. Their farm system has potentially 3 players who could be a factor this season, and after that it should be left for dead. It has been Dombrowski'd. The Phillies could very well finish 3rd in their division, and that might be their best showing for the next 5 years or better. One real OF addition and one real SP addition would have meant a lot.

Honorable Mention- Brian Cashman, New York Yankees

I was prepared to award this to Scott Harris of the Tigers, but then he went out and signed Framber Valdez and Justin Verlander.

Like Mo, Dombrowski has some major accomplishments too. That doesn't mean he got the job done this offseason.
