The Nationals and Cardinals announced a one-for-one swap of righty relievers. St. Louis acquires George Soriano while Washington picks up Andre Granillo. Washington placed righty Trevor Williams on the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move. The Nationals had designated Soriano for assignment last week when they claimed lefty Ken Waldichuk off waivers, so they needed to open a 40-man spot for Granillo. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported the trade shortly before the announcements.

Huh. Wonder what they were thinking here. Granillo seemed to have some promise.

This seems like an odd trade to me.
Thought Granillo had a lot of potential. Soriano's numbers don't look that spectacular.

Anyone see what we are missing here?

young guy with potential for older guy (a few years) whose #s last year were poor.
agree, head scratching trade but there's no doubt stuff we don't know.
I bet the Cards like the strike out per inning.

otoh, I wasn't enamored with Granillo.

Granillo averaged 12.2 K/9 in the minors.
He is younger. Has experience closing.

I don't get this at all.

Can’t say I totally understand this transaction. Granillo seemed headed toward being a solid bullpen piece, with a plus slider and plus-plus changeup. Granted, his velocity isn’t ideal for a high-leverage reliever, but he had a really nice season at Memphis last year and seemed to be getting a better handle on the control issues that have plagued him previously.

Are they becoming smarter than themselves and think they will find all these like Jerry Rice draft deals etc ?

Soriano will hopefully find some certainty after a hectic offseason. This is the fourth time he has changed organizations since November. The 26-year-old had spent his entire career with the Marlins until they placed him on waivers at the beginning of the offseason. He landed with Baltimore, Atlanta and Washington via successive designations and waiver claims.

Think this guy will fit right in.
