Pick 4

Here a game for a slow news day Friday. Play if you wish.

Add one starter, one reliever, and one position player to the current Cards roster. You also pick their manager. The caveat is, the players are all retired but still living. They could have played on any team and they were in their prime. Only 1 player per team, so you can't pick 3 Cards players. The manager pick also cannot be associated with any of the players. You get one pick from each category. By adding these 3 picks to the current roster, would you have a division leading team this year and what do you think the win/loss record would be by adding them on? I saw the recent post on CT about guessing wins/losses for the year, and decided to throw this wrinkle into the mix.

Mine would be Albert for position player.
Mariano Rivera for the pen.
Randy Johnson is my starter.
Manager is Bobby Cox
We finish the year 86-76 and we squeak in with the last wild card spot.

You got me Scouty. :D Yes, pick 4. I was only doing players first and then thought to add the manager.

Looking just at stats it's hard to not pick Clemens, Bonds (we need an OF), Rivera, and then take your pick of HOF manager.

Based on personal preference it's hard not to pick Randy Johnson (though Maddux or Pedro would also be a lot of fun), Albert Pujols (don't care about Burleson being blocked), still Rivera, and LaRussa.

This question would have been different just a few years ago. Lost so many greats of the game recently (Mays, Aaron, Gibson, Whitey, etc.).

Since it's just for fun anyway, I'll stick with some favorite Cardinals.

Mgr: LaRussa
Hitter: 2009 Pujols
Starter: 2011 Chris Carpenter (Not his best statistical season, but single handedly willed the team to key victories)
Closer: 1986 Todd Worrell

Pretty sure that team could compete for the division and make a deep playoff run with an addition or two at the deadline.

Exactly! I was thinking the same thing as I posted it. I would have taken Mays and Gibson for sure, just a few years back. Maybe a Tom Seaver or a Frank Robinson. We have lost several of the greats recently.

When did Trout retire?
And aren't Torre/Mariano "related", which was against your parameters?
