"Yes, under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) enacted after the 2021-22 lockout, the top two finishers in the MLB Rookie of the Year (ROY) voting in each league are automatically awarded a full year of service time (172 days). This applies even if they did not break camp with the team or were called up later in the season. "
"Key details regarding this rule:
Automatic Service: Winning or coming in second place in the ROY voting guarantees a full year of service time for that season.
Effect on Free Agency: This rule reduces the club’s control over that player from six years to five, as they reach free agency one year earlier.

Yes, and many miss the fact that if the rookie is NOT on the opening day roster and goes on to win in the voting, then the team doesn't get the draft pick. That's why if you have a possibility like a JJ you want him on that Opending Day roster . How foolish would the Cardinals look to start him out at Memphis for a few weeks, bring him up and then he happens to win the ROY award and MLB says SORREEE ! you didn't have him on your roster the opening day so NO pick for you ! Bloom isn't that dumb to do that

It's crazy people still play that "service time" card.
As I posted multiple time ozzie........if JJW becomes the star player we all hope he will be, then BDWJr will ink him to a L-T extension long before he reaches FA.

In theory a team can still sabotage his season because a player with a full season
would get more votes than a half of season of work all things being equal.
It is not good business or a move done with integrity, imo.

In theory yes, but it would have to be close to 3 mos missed. Some have won ROY or ranked 2nd with only ~4 mos up.
And if he only played 3 mos, then we are missing the entire point of the season, which is to DEVELOP the young guys into MLB producers by giving them playing time. And he is now the most important one to be getting that PT.

I think he opens in STL as well. But the odds of that not happening are a lot higher than your estimate IMO. He has all of 500 ABs in professional baseball and might still need some development. All will be revealed in the last 2 weeks of spring training when he is facing real ML pitching.

Some guy in the another thread was arguing with me that not only would he start in Memphis, but he would most likely spend the entire season there! Wow.

No there not "higher" at all AZC..And you totally neglected he was a COLLEGE star player, those PA's are more valuable than any low level ones.
I was actually being generous since the he's not only going to be on the OD roster, he's going to be the OD 2nd baseman and should be hitting lead-off (by the idiot Manager will likely hit him 7th or 8th
).
