Trade Donovan and Gorman to Seattle

Cards could trade Donovan and Gorman to Seattle for their #5 infield prospect that has power and on base percentage with decent Ks. That would set the Cards infield for the future with Winn SS, Wetherholt 3rd, Arroyo 2nd,+Burleson 1st, Herrera C. Eventually when they figure out Herrera is better to move off catcher he could also possibly move to 1st. Cards should be able to come up with a catcher between their plethora of options. The outfield has some potentially options with Lars, Walker, Church, Scott, Baez and they can live through this one rebuild season with just one veteran pick up in Austin Hays. After this rebuild year then they can decide if and how many OF spots they need to upgrade next year.

Not enough IMO for the Cardinals.

Also, Josh Baez hasn't even touched AAA yet. He will not be in STL. Same for Bernal.

Nootbaar hitting 5th?? (Oli, is that you?!? JK)

But back to the trade.....I doubt they want Pallante or Gorman. And I dont know of those 2 names are enough for Donovan by himself. JMO.

Take Gorman and Pallante out and add JoJo and I’d do it. Everything I’ve read is that Seattle won’t trade any of Colt Emerson, Kade Anderson, Ryan Sloan, and Michael Arroyo though and they’re rumored to have offered one of Montes/Cijntje plus a couple of fringe prospects which I wouldn’t do if I was Bloom.

Variations of the trade with Seattle have been thrown around here on CT. Just reading from different sources about what Seattle will and won’t do, the only constant seems to be Cijntje. Well he just isn’t enough.

The reports say Seattle doesn’t want to lose anyone off of their major league roster. That’s fine. Reports also say that they don’t want to lose any of their top pitching prospects nor want to lose their top hitting prospect. Fine. What are they prepared to give up. If they think Cijntje plus a low level prospect is enough then there won’t be a deal with Seattle.

IMO, if we believe what reports are out there and Cijntje is the best pitching prospect they will part with then we have to get one of Montes/Arroyo (both are top 100 prospects) and I would also ask for their Comp B pick. So the Cardinals deal
Donovan
Romero

Seattle deals
Montes #3 or Arroyo #5
Cijntje #7
their Comp B pick

We get nothing from their major league roster. We don’t ask for either of their top pitching prospects BUT we do get good value from them. Donovan helps anyone he is traded to and they get him at a reasonable price for the next couple of years. Romero helps anyone he gets traded to also.

Cijntje is a promising arm but he’s not ready to help us yet. Neither is Montes. Arroyo is probably the closest to major league ready. With the Comp B pick, that would give us 4 picks in the top 50. The bonus pool would be a large amount. All in all, we would continue with the top minor league system in baseball while adding 4 additional top 50 picks.

Also clearing Gray, Contreras, Mikolas, Fedde, Donovan, Helsley and Romero from our payroll. The only question is what happens with Arenado and if there is a market for him.

Im the first guy to point out that we over value Donovan. But unless Seattle changes their tune on who they will part with, I'm looking for a different deal. If they really want Donovan, they will blink. He's the best offensive upgrade they can obtain with prospects. They don't have money for the other guys. Unless they decide to stand pat, which i doubt.

And this is why you can't hardly trade with Seattle. The Cardinals don't want to "lose" Donovan either. The Mariners want to get nice players and want to dig in the couch cushions for spare "prospects to make it happen.

Exactly TB. We need a higher ceiling prospect than what they're offering for a really good major league player.

Well, if the Mariners won't part with any of Emerson, Anderson, Sloan, Arroyo, and none of the 7 pitchers who started for them last year, then Bloom should just tell them to pound sand.

I agree but I don’t really blame them. I’d rather use those chips to get Marte rather than Donny but it seems like the D-Backs are going to keep Marte.

They won't spend them for Marte either. Arizona wants major league ready pitching. Seattle isn't about to do that.

Exactly. If the Mariners won’t part with the young talent needed to make the deal, they don’t get Donovan.

Cardinals have all the leverage here. Options with other teams, hold him and trade him at the trade deadline or extend him. Wouldn’t be the worst outcome for Donovan to assist/mentor Wetherholt and others.

Evidently the Dbacks are nearly done with trying to trade Marte: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/12/ ... eason.html

If the Mariners are not willing to give up enough talent to obtain Donovan, they sure as hail aren't going to get Marte.

Seattle has money. Just frugal. They ponied up for Naylor and still have 3b to address

So true. Maybe Seattle believes acquiring Marte might actually be worth letting go of some top tier prospects.

Same syndrome with Burleson. Just because they’re the best on THIS team, that doesn’t mean they’re actually top tier MLB talent.
