Herrera to play in the WBC for Panama

For someone wanting to get back into Catching, I would think getting familiar with all the new pitchers would be a high priority.

Disclaimer ~ I loathe the timing of the WBC. I know the environment is electric...ClassicO has attested to this several times. I don't like Catchers and Pitchers missing Spring Training for the WBC. I wish it was held in December, but that would probably be difficult on the pitchers.

I HATE that!
The WBC is good for nothing except injuring key players.

not to mention the complete fall off from Nado and Goldy... I'm thinking Veterans should never be allowed to attend in lieu of Spring Training

Yea I don’t get it either. The only thing I can think of is in spring training most veterans are just going through the motions whereas in the WBC they are going to be going full out and you can bet they will be running on him every chance they get and the cardinals want to see how he handles it

Big deal. These guys have been playing year-round since they were 12 years old.
That little bit isn't going to matter a hill of beans. Such drama

So,... Ivan Herrera will *not* be the Cardinals starting catcher on opening day. Check.

Another take: this might actually help him, while giving the Cards FO some live action games to assess him.

I don’t know. It’s not like he’s a 37 yr Yadi playing.

That’s what I was thinking. Spring training games are usually the veterans just going through the motions but the WbC they will be going all out and with them knowing his arm is Suspect they will try to take advantage and run on him every opportunity so it will be sink or swim for him as a catcher

He won't get enough work with the Cardinals pitchers. It will be an excuse when things go haywire. Or.... the Cardinals plan to use someone else as the primary catcher.

Right? If I have been ever okay with a Cards player playing in the WBC, it's Herrera now.

If he even catches for them.

I’d guess Miguel Amaya is the starting catcher, Christian Bethancourt as the backup. Thought I saw Leo Bernal will also be on the roster.

Herrera is probably there to hit.

And it opens the door for crooks to get a majority of the playing time in spring training and getting familiar with the pitching staff so if they run rampant on Herrera in the WBC and he gets back they can always say look we gave you a chance it’s not happening and they already have time evaluating crooks to see if he’s ready

Why can’t we align the WBc with the CBA lockouts?
