At the end of this year is the year to extend.

Ideally in this order assuming everyone plays well.

Walker,
Winn,
Herrara
Wetherholt
Liberatore
Scott,

Scott,
an organization short on quality RHP, you should extend McGreevy. He's never injured and you'll get 3.50-4.00 ERA with 175+ innings each season. True work horse

Winn, Herrera, Wetherholt...I'd be careful with Herrera, though....a smaller extension, but an extension nonetheless. We're short on quality RH bats, but he's limited in the positions he can fill...adequately speaking.

I agree in general, but i think McGreevy is more in the 4-4.50 era range. I never see him getting in the 3's over a full season

As much as I like Burleson as a hitter. He probably needs to establish himself at 1B this coming season before an extension is considered.

I say the Cardinals wait and wee what kind of MLB hitter Wetherholt is before any extension is discussed.

-No on:

Winn
Burleson

Wait another year

-Still too early but likely if he keeps progressing at the plate and stays healthy:

Hererra

-The guy I would extend after his 2nd MLB season, if he's the player most think he will be, is:

JJW

-Big fan of Donny but he's likely traded so:

No

deciding who to extend is step one

getting them to extend is the greater challenge

It really isn't. Players have agents who, with very rare exception, tell their clients to take as much guaranteed money as you can get as soon as you can get it.

Agree unless he surprises. And that's still worth $$ if he can cover IP.

If that were true, there would be few free agents every season….and no opt outs..

Quality players look forward to testing the market….

A player passing on free agency to extend with a mediocre team in a small market has little confidence they will do well…

I’m all for attempting to extend some guys….but STL is a tough sell right now..

We're talking about players who haven't reached enough service time for free agency, so opt outs is irrelevant to the discussion.

As for your, "there would be few free agents" comment - most teams don't look to extend players in pre-arb or arb years, and after a certain point in their service time it makes no sense for a player to sign an extension vs going to free agency. And, yes, high end talents are always going to wait for free agency.

Again, they do not have a tough sell - they have guaranteed money that no injury or lack of production can erase, and they have the ability to get the player truly life changing money sooner. No easier sell than "more money sooner."

I could be wrong, but I feel Donovan and Burleson might like staying with the Cardinals for a long time.

The only one that I would remotely consider would be Winn. Assuming Donovan is traded. Also doesn’t the 2027 labor dispute impact teams thinking on extensions and dollars spent?

I hardly think the Cardinals would be anywhere near any "New" limits
