Out of the box thought with Walker: Play him at 1st base?

Obviously some of Walker’s struggles have to be between his ears. And remember, he only moved to the OF because Arenado and Goldie were here. He was a 3b in the minors his first few years.

I remember more than 30 years ago, the Cards moved Gregg Jefferies to 1b partly because he stressed out playing a more demanding position, which affected his hitting.

Could moving him to 1b increase his comfort level? Did having him in the OF do the opposite?

Might be worth asking him.

It's an interesting idea. He hasn't responded, or produced well when he's been asked to make changes- whether at bat, or in the field, so there's that. However, maybe this would simplify things for him?

We have a first baseman.
Burleson

For a good offer, I'd trade him in a heartbeat, but that's just me.

I don’t think moving him is a good idea. He needs to concentrate on hitting not learning a new position, again. He needs to start in minors and learn how to hit. So far he is one of the biggest busts in Cardinals history.

So, if the assumption is that moving Walker to RF - a position with which he was unfamiliar - contributed to his struggles with the bat, the solution is to move him to yet another position with which he is unfamiliar and has never played for a single moment in the minors or the majors?
Hmmm....

im sure he could play 1b but then you are forcing burly and herrera if he cant catch back to outfield which isnt ideal either. i dont see the benefit unless you truly think itd help walker mentalky

and while it doesnt matter short term cuz we are just shuffling players, walkers bat would need to rebound even to higher levels to be an acceptable hitting 1b.

Well, seeing his nackground is 3b, there are similarities.

If we think playing a more familiar position will help his hitting, then let’s move him back to 3B.

After it's all said and done, I look for Burleson to get the bulk of the playing time at first with maybe Herrera spotting some against tough lefties. If Herrera works out as catcher then so be it but if he can't then he'll most likely DH, maybe stand in left on rare occasions. I'd leave Walker right where he is and give him a season to perform. If he doesn't then next season I'd look for something else.

Walker should be in LF. Most MLB teams put weakest defender there. If the outfield remains unchanged, it should be Walker, Scott, Nootbaar.

Let's see if he ever becomes a quality major league hitter first.

If he can't hit, then his best position is on a plane out of St. Louis.
