Both were taken in 2016. 1 career WAR vs 23.
Where would we be now if we had gone high on C that year and taken Smith in the first round? We knew we’d have to replace Yadi eventually and Kniz became the “answer”??? He was just the latest in a string of glove first poor hitting potential heirs to Yadi and we seriously undershot with that strategy.
Instead with the 23rd pick we took Delvin Perez?!?

A lauded Top 5 Pick, 6’-3” SS out of Puerto Rico that dropped because of a Positive Test for PED’s, vs a 5’-10” Catcher that went 32nd Overall? This isn’t even a debate. People loved the Pérez pick.
Not only was it highly praised, but it was by a Front Office that was renown for nailing their draft picks. If only we knew now what we knew then, that 2014 was the peak and it was all downhill from there.
2014 - #27 Luke Weaver
2014 - #34 Jack Flaherty
2015 - #23 Nick Plummer
2015 - #39 Jake Woodford
2016 - #23 Delvin Perez
2016 - #33 Dylan Carlson
BTW, it’s worth noting that the Dodgers had a previous pick in that draft at #20; which they used on Gavin Lux. Nothing is a sure-fire guarantee.

The baseball draft is the least sure thing in pro sports. Look at how many guys are lower round picks or guys who were never drafted. It’s amazing how important developing players is.
