I really like this for Baltimore. They got a solid pitcher without giving up any MLB talent.
Trade summary, per @JeffPassan:

Orioles get - Shane Baz

Rays get - Slater de Brun, Caden Bodine, Michael Forret, Austin Overn, Competitive Balance Round A pick

Really good for Baltimore. I'm starting to wonder who will take the mound for Tampa Bay?

I don’t think Baltimore is done either. I could see them sending Coby Mayo plus something else to Miami for Cabrera.

I think I read they signed Matz to start.

I could see Baltimore and Miami both being all about that. The Orioles are reported to be in on free agents Framber Valdez and Ranger Suarez as well. What if they made the trade AND signed one of those guys? Already added Taylor Ward, Pete Alonso, Ryan Helsley, and now Baz. Heads up Blue Jays, Yankees, and Red Sox.

That Competive-A pick could have been thrown into a Romero trade. Do they have any more?

Orioles gave up half their 2025 draft from the first 40 picks for Baz.... Bodine is a really good catching prospect. Won't hit for power, but he can hit very well in general. Really good caller/receiver behind the plate with CC in college. Slater de Brun is a 4/5 tool prospect...the 18 yo may grow into more power...we'll see.

They still have Aloy and Irish...2 of the better hitters from the 2025 draft. They did a lot better this year in the Draft than they did in 2024... Vance Honeycutt has all the Tools of a 5 WAR player, except for that important one...."Contact"...of any sort.

I could see that. Their window is coming so they need to add more to compete.

I was hoping for that too when I read they were in on JoJo. I think I’ve just seen the one.

Agreed

Baz 2025
31 GS
4.87 ERA
4.37 FiP
1.33 WHiP

Guy's got a career 4.25 ERA/4.28 FiP

Looks like a #4/5 to me.

Meh

yep.... Orioles went a bit overboard for Baz.

I'm not saying that Libby is Baz, but they're closer than you'd think....same age, Libby is a more coveted LHP. I think Libby has one less year of control...but they're both at least 3 years of control left...that's golden. Baz has more K's.

Trading Baz gets you 2 first 40 picks from the 2025 draft and another Top 40 pick come 2026 Draft....plus Ovum and a middling throw in...that's insane....If you can get 2/3 of that for Libby, you do it.

Ridiculous return, but I guess the O's feared a bidding war?

Trade Libby now....get what you can, it's not going to get better than that HAUL...that's a real "HAUL"

Cheaper to buy mediocre pitching?

I was coming back to add this. The Cards should absolutely be listening on Libby after seeing what TB got for Baz.
