Here's a quick summary of the players we expect to be part of our next competitive window:
Winn - FA 2030 (age 28)
Wetherholt - FA 2032 (if on O-D roster) (age 29)
Herrera - FA 2030 (age 29/30)
Josh Baez - ETA 2027?
Bernal - ETA 2027-28?
Jesus Baez - ETA 2028?
R. Rodriguez - ETA 2028?
Y. Padilla - ETA 2029?
R. Mitchell - ETA 2029?
Chase Davis, Deniel Ortiz on the way also.
These are my guesses at ETAs based not necessarily on when they'll get a Sept Call-Up, but when I think they'll first start a full season as big leaguers from Opening Day.
So if 2027-28 is when we expect this full cast to start showing up, and also about the time we should be adding supplementary veterans, then it seems like they should be setting up Winn and Wetherholt to be growing into established franchise cornerstone roles by that time. That way, you have a roster set-up with young, middle, and old.
Without extensions, by 2028, you would have Wetherholt tasting arbitration right around the corner and Winn just as close to free agency as Donovan is now.
Wetherholt seems like the type of player most organizations do not wait around long to try and lock up.
I'm not suggesting lock them up today, but I would say it should be coming to the forefront of priorities in the next calendar year.
And I'm not saying give 12 years to Winn. Something more like 6-7 years, similar to what the Braves did with A. Simmons years back.
However, the 8-10 year deal should absolutely be in the back of our minds for Wetherholt.
I could see holding off on Herrera. We like the way he's progressing. However, he is limited defensively which means the value depends on his bat really holding up. Remember how quickly Jose Martinez fell off our radar once his offense took just a small step back. (Herrera is nowhere near the liability Martinez is, but still a bat-first player) Herrera also is much younger (with better on-base skills) than Martinez was and has the potential to turn the promise into a mainstay middle of the lineup hitter for years.
If Winn and Wetherholt aren't the franchise faces, then we might as well not have any.
Bloom has been as intentional as can be about shifting the competitive window out farther and trying to build for that window. Why would he not be thinking about extensions for these two?

I'd be talking to Winn, Burleson, Herrera, and maybe Liberatore about extensions now. Ideally, they would be to sign them through age 30 plus one team option year. So 7 years + 1 option year for Winn, 4 years + 1 option year for Burleson, and 5 years + 1 team option year for Herrea and Liberatore.
But, before half of CT freaks out over this, let me say in capital letters - IF THEY CAN GET THEM DONE AT THE RIGHT PRICE.
Winn's deal, because they would be buying out 3-4 FA years would be sizeable, in the $1x millions in AAV range. Burleson's and Liberatore's deals would be buying out 1-2 FA years and need to be in the $5-$9 million in AAV range. Herrera's deal would only have the team option year be a FA season, so again in the $5-$9 million AAV range.
I would be talking to Wetherholt about an extension by no later than the end of his rookie season. Doyle the same.

I would offer a 5-year to their current “best” player, Donovan, as those should cover his remaining best playing years. He’s not a superstar of course, but every competitive team needs one on their team
Reminds of the value that Stephan Kwan means to Cleveland. Of course they have a superstar in Jose Ramirez, but without a Kwan on 5 the team, they would have finished several positions lower in the pecking order. Bit Kwan, like Donovan, is also targeted by many teams, as being a valuable addition for their playoff hunts.

No need (IMO) to rush into any extensions at this time.
IF JJW turns out to be the stud we all hope he will become, then he's the only one who could become an all-star and deserving of an early extension.
I would wait another year at least before considering M. Winn, Bumbles and I. Hererra.
